Congratulations to new Australian Citizens and Dickson Community Awards winners

It was wonderful to spend Australia Day in the Dickson electorate at the Samford, Strathpine and Esk Australia Day Citizenship Ceremonies.  In Samford, I was delighted to welcome 28 new Australian Citizens into the Australian family at a special ceremony jointly hosted by the Samford Rotary Club and Cr Bob Millar.
As part of the ceremony, the annual Dickson Community Awards were also presented and it was an honour to congratulate all the winners and in particular Ocean View local James Higgins who received a Dickson Community Youth Achievement Award. As a student at St. Paul’s, James was one of only 180 students nationally to receive an Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award. James has in recent weeks moved to Canberra to undertake 3 years of study followed by a year at the Duntroon military facility. I congratulate James and wish him well in his chosen career.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients who received a 2008 Dickson Pine Rivers Community Award.  Nominations will be taken throughout the year for the 2009 Awards.  If you would like to nominate someone, please visit my website www.peterdutton.com.au or call my office on 32 05 9977 for a nomination form.
Emergency Volunteer Support Fund Applications invited
Applications are now open for the National Emergency Volunteer Support Fund.  The Fund helps volunteers groups – which involve up to 500,000 people in emergency response and recovery activities across the nation – to build and train their pool of willing people to be ready for the whole range of possible emergencies.
The Fund was introduced by the Howard Government and has funded 595 projects to a total of $15.3 million since 2004. Details of the program, including Guidelines and Application Forms can be found at www.ema.gov.au/communityengagement.  Applications close 7 March 2008.
Get on board with the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme
Applications are now open to sail on the Young Endeavour during its 20th Anniversary. Young Endeavour Youth Scheme began when the magnificent sail training ship Young Endeavour was given to the people of Australia as a Bicentennial gift from the United Kingdom back in 1988.
A voyage on the tall ship Young Endeavour is a voyage of a lifetime. For 11-days with 23 other young Aussies aged 16 – 23 years you learn not only how to sail but how to work together as a team. You also get to see spectacular parts of Australia that many others may never get to see. Over 20 voyages are conducted each year exploring the Australian coastline by the Young Endeavour Youth scheme, supported by donations, Commonwealth Government funding and operated by the Royal Australian Navy.
Visit www.youngendeavour.gov.au for more information about this exciting adventure. You may wish to apply for future voyages.  Unfortunately applications for voyages in the second half of 2008 closed on 29 February.

Kind regards
Peter Dutton MP
