Dec2012_OLD MILL VET SURGERY PET OF THE MONTH

This month’s Pet of the Month comes from a little closer to home than usual.  One of our nurses, Amy, was shocked to have her 10 month old Boxer, Poppy, rushed into the surgery recently with a suspected snake bite.
On utilising the snake venom detection kit, Dr Annika could see Poppy was suffering from Brown Snake envenomation, and was treated immediately with anti-venom.  Being a bouncy Boxer pup, it was obvious that Poppy was ‘not herself’ as she lay calmly on the table and allowed the vets and nurses to perform tests on her.
Poppy’s clinical signs started to improve fluid therapy and two vials of anti-venom and she was carefully transferred to a specialist centre for overnight care.  On return to the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery the next morning, she bounced through the door and it was obvious that she was feeling much better already.  Amy says you never think it’ll be your own dog rushed through the door with the next life or death emergency, but thanks to quick thinking and immediate quality veterinary care, Poppy lives to tell the tale of the day she played with the Brown Snake.
If you think there is any chance your pet may have been bitten by a snake – call the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery on 3425 2222 immediately.  The signs – such as vomiting, collapse, bleeding and tremors – can often be confused with a tummy upset or tick paralysis, but a few minutes makes a big difference in treating a snake bite.
