New vaccine to help us fight Hendra virus
The release of the new Equine Hendra Vaccination this month couldn’t have come soon enough and has kept our vets very busy!
Kath and Kristie attended an information night held in Brisbane where horse vets from around south-east Queensland converged to learn about this new vaccine and how it will benefit the horse industry.
Hendra is a deadly virus carried by flying foxes that infect horses, which then infect people.  Vaccination protects the horses’ health and thereby the health of all people associated with it.  This is a major breakthrough in safety for the horses we love and all of us involved with them.
Studies have proved this vaccine to be safe and very effective for any horse over 4 months of age, with the only reported side effect being a small lump at the injection site that goes away within days.  There is ongoing study into its safety in pregnant mares and breeding animals.
All our vets have completed their accreditation (at this stage only accredited vets can administer the vaccine), and to date have vaccinated over 70 horses.  If you would like to chat to one of our vets about the Hendra vaccination and your horse please give us a call.
The Peregrine Falcon
Thank you to the kind people who brought in the peregrine falcon fledgling last week, with special thanks to Janet Taylor who drove the bird all the way up to Australia Zoo for specialised treatment.  Unfortunately x-rays showed there were 2 gunshot pellets lodged around the bird’s trachea and neck and the bird had to be euthanized.  If anyone has any information regarding the incident please contact us on 3425 1544.
It’s almost finished!!
Many of you driving past or popping in to see us will have seen the roof is now on our new building, doors and windows are going in and the cladding is going on the external walls, so it’s really taking shape.  We’re expecting to move in sometime in January, not long now!
