COUNCILLORS COLUMN Aug09
by Cr Bob Millar
AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP
Moreton Bay Regional Council held another of its naturalisation ceremonies recently with more than 110 residents becoming Australian Citizens.
17 countries were represented with new “aussies” originating from United Kingdom, India, Fiji, Philippines, South Africa, USA, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, France, Kenya, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, China, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden and Thailand. Congratulations to all our new ‘Aussies’.
DAYBORO TRANSFER STATION
Residents who avail themselves of the free additional domestic tipping service provided by the Dayboro Transfer Station will have noticed signage advising that the Transfer Station will be closed on Thursdays. Apart from this being a further step in aligning the operations of Council’s landfill and transfer station sites across the Region, this change will assist in the ongoing operational efficiency of the facility. These amended times of operation still provide local residents with access to this facility which is equal to or better than that available at all other similar sites across the region.
DAYBORO SHOW – WELL DONE
Congratulations to the Dayboro Show Society and all those volunteers in the community who again worked so tirelessly to produce yet another great show in July. The importance of these events to the overall history and social fabric of the communities they serve cannot be overstated, and they warrant the ongoing support of these communities for a whole range of reasons. One can only hope that these small shows can continue to bring interest, happiness and strength to the spirit of the community.
DAYBORO CEMETERY TO UNDERGO FACE LIFT
Over recent years Council has been investing significant funds towards upgrading of its eight cemeteries and one memorial garden. I am pleased to report that in the recently adopted Council Budget an amount of $15,000 has been included to fund commencement of a 5 year redevelopment plan for the Dayboro cemetery. Subject to adoption of future budgets it is proposed to commence actual ‘on the ground’ works in 2010/2011.
DAYBORO SOCCER CLUB
As tenants of what is undoubtedly one of the best presented football pitches in the region, the Dayboro Football Club will shortly be the proud occupants of a building that will provide toilets, storage, supporter space, a place to gather and future modest canteen facilities. The project, which in total is expected to cost as much as $80,000, is shortly to be put out for tender. The construction is expected to commence in September 2009 with a completion date of late October/early November. This building will be a welcome addition to the club facilities for the start of the 2010 football season.
DAYBORO FLOOD MANAGEMENT
As part of Council’s long term plans to seek a solution to the Dayboro village flooding situation, Council has, in this year’s budget, allocated $100,000 to undertake design work for the widening of the flood channel that passes across Williams Street. This project is likely to include the insertion of additional box culverts in the road, however, I have made it clear to planning staff that I require the current integrity and amenity of this area to be preserved – this would include retaining the existing bridge and its character.
BLOOD DONORMOBILE BACK – HELP SAVE A LIFE
2009 is the year of the blood donor and with around 20,000 Australians needing blood each week, there has never been a better time to donate. Currently around only 3.5 per cent of eligible blood donors actually donate blood. Donating blood is free, takes around an hour and can help save the lives of up to three people. So now is the time to think about this as the van will be back in town on Wednesday 5th August. The location is in Williams Street near the Swimming Pool and they will be taking collections between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm. To book prior to the date phone 0413 153 590 or you can simply approach a staff member on the day to discuss your eligibility to donate.
