Councillor Bob Millar shares the good news from the budget with members of the Samford Bowls, Tennis and Netball clubs.

Council earmarked $4.89m in its recent budget to fund the first stage of works at Samford Parklands.

The former CSIRO land located on either side of Mt Samson Rd, at the entrance to Samford, is zoned for a variety of uses including environmental reserve, parkland, intensive recreation, and outdoor recreation.

Divisional Councillor Bob Millar (Div 11) said this significant council contribution supported by additional funds from the State Government would in the first instance go towards Netball and Tennis facilities, as well as car parks, paths and landscape works.

“Future plans include the provision of an amenities building  for the Tennis and Netball area and development of new soccer facilities on the eastern side of Mt Samson Rd, as funds become available,” he said.

Cr Millar said the Samford Parklands project has been the result of several years of community consultation, detailed design and planning since the land was acquired some five years ago and the first multi-million dollar stage of the project will involve the construction of new road entry points from Mt Samson Rd, including the establishment of a new entry to the Samford Bowls Club.

Jo Tsang and Howard Nielsen who represent the Netball and Tennis Clubs respectively in the planning of the new facilities said that their members are excited at the prospect of the new facilities becoming available to meet the needs of their rapidly growing clubs and are looking forward to the anticipated early 2009 completion of construction.

“The bowls club as an adjoining neighbour will benefit via increased patronage of our facilities and we expect that our prime location and services will attract new members,” said club board chairman, Phillip Cullen-Ward.

Cr Millar said the Grange Target Archers have also received Council and State Government  assistance to establish facilities on the western side of Mt Samson Rd, close to Samford Village with construction of an indoor range and outdoor facilities expected to commence within the next few months.
