BAI RUI TAEKWON DO CLUB NEWS

The demonstrations of board breaks at the Dayboro Day Festival were spectacular.

For the Dayboro Bai Rui Taekwon-Do Club, the first half of 2008 has certainly been hectic.  A National Bai Rui TKD tournament was scheduled in April and held at Brisbane Grammar School.

So the month leading up to the tournament warranted a major focus on personal fitness and the fine tuning of sparring techniques.  Aside from being lots of fun, tournaments give students the opportunity to practice their skills against an unfamiliar opponent.
Dayboro students featured well at the awards ceremony.  Congratulations are due to all members for their achievements on the day with medals being earned for;
1st places in
Junior Wee Pee Wee Sparring,
Junior Girls Senior Patterns,
Women’s Presidents Patterns and
Men’s Heavyweight Junior Sparring.
2nd places in
Junior Girls Senior Patterns,
Men’s Heavyweight Black Belt Presidents Sparring, and
Women’s Presidents Sparring.
3rd places in
Girls Lightweight Sparring, and
Men’s Heavyweight Junior Sparring.

This success is largely a reflection of the wonderful instructors at the Dayboro club.  Mr Don Byrne (5th Dan Black Belt) has been a key driver of the club, having instructed at Dayboro for over 15 years.  And he is ably supported by Mrs Linda Goldstiver (also 5th Dan Black Belt).  Mrs “G” (as she is affectionately known) lives locally and started her training as a white belt right here at the Dayboro club.  She is now the highest ranking female in Bai Rui TKD in Australia.  Recently there was great excitement when Mrs G tested for promotion to 5th Dan Black Belt.  Those who saw the testing agreed “she was inspirational!”  Congratulations Mrs G – we’re very proud of you!
The club’s involvement in Dayboro Day was another highlight for May.  Students from other Bai Rui clubs were invited to join Dayboro club to participate in the parade and demonstration that followed.  Those that saw the demonstration could be forgiven for thinking a “Bruce Lee” movie was being shot locally.  It was certainly a very impressive display.  All students participated in putting a the show together – the newer students demonstrated foundation skills that were being developed, and advanced students dazzled the audience with some spectacular feats showing just what can be achieved.
There’s also a big “thankyou” to the Lions Club for allowing us to participate in the Raft Race this year – it was a lot of fun.  A solidly built craft (read heavy!) with clever artwork by Mrs Sarah Bragg looked impressive at the starting line up.  But the soccer club took the honours on the day with a better power to weigh ratio.  Discussions to modify the craft and engage a later model engine should deliver an improved performance next year.
Dayboro Bai Rui Tae Kwon Do club trains in the community hall on Tuesday and Thursday Nights from 5.30pm to 7pm.  New students are always welcome – call Mr Don Byrne on 0407 145 908 or Mrs Linda Goldstiver on 3425 1403 to find out more.
