AUG2013_Old Mill Vet on The hidden dangers in our sheds
We all know about the human foods that can be dangerous if our pets steal them from our kitchen, but do you ever think about the undesirable poisons around the house that might seem delicious to your pet?
Fertilizers, rodent control products and even horse wormers can pose deadly risks to curious pets.
Fertilizers contain high levels of certain minerals, which aid in plant growth, however in a pet this can cause major problems, as they can have an overdose effect.
Rat baits work on nuisance rodents by making them unable to clot their blood, causing death. Unfortunately, these poisons have the same effect on our pets’ bodies, even very large dogs can die quickly from ingesting this. If you suspect your pet has eaten rat poison, contact the Old Mill Animal Hospital immediately.
Horse and cow products such as de-wormers, have large quantities of chemicals designed to be ingested by large animals, some up to 800kg! If pets decide to chew on these, they can have a toxic effect on their system, and should be seen by a vet immediately.
Tick collars are another good example of something that smells terrible to us, however a cheeky dog could get seriously ill if he is curious enough to chew a tick collar, either off himself or off another dog. Amitraz poisoning occurs when a tick collar is ingested and the treatment usually consists of a two-hourly injection in an animal hospital, to reverse the poisoning.
There are many other hidden dangers that our pets inexplicably find interesting enough to eat, so if you are suspect your pet may have consumed anything out of the ordinary, please contact that Old Mill Animal Hospital urgently on 3425 2222 and seek further advice. A quick response on your part may be the key to saving your pets’ life!
