Apr2014_the DDRFB Chatter

Dayboro Day is just around the corner and you will find us in the usual spot.  We will have our outrageously popular raffles as usual.  All proceeds from these raffles are shared between the 3 brigades that host the stall – DDRFB, Ocean View & Samsonvale.  Thank you for your continuing support.
RFS Awareness Day is in June but we will tell you more about it next month.  We’ll keep you posted via FB too.

Congratulations to Johnny Juleff on making Crew Leader!
To be granted status of CL, John had to complete Firefighter Advanced Skills (FAS) and Crew Leader training.  CL’s support the brigade with operational and non-operational duties. He may be called upon to act as an Incident Controller or Sector Commander at Level 1 incidents.  Congrats mate!

Welcome to our newest member & trainee Chris Lonergan.

The BTO (Brigade Training Officer) has taken off for a holiday for a few months so ‘Support Trainer’ Janet McCabe has stepped up to take over the brigade training. With another Skills & Drills Day coming up, core skills are on the agenda.

Our appropriately named event (due to location & date), ‘Operation Warm Up’ will be held at the Dayboro Showgrounds on Saturday 14th June. Residents are welcome to drop in to have a chat to one of our VCE’s, or pick up a pamphlet, maybe a sticker for the kids or just check out the awesomeness that is your RFS.  More info in the May issue & on our FB page. We posted some photos on FB from last years’ event so head over & check them out in our ‘Albums’.

(Volunteer Info Profile)
I joined the brigade in November 2012 to learn new skills and give back to the community. I live in Kurwongbah and have been there for 11 years. I’m currently a full time uni student studying a Bachelor of Psychology and a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.  I have two part time jobs, one at Laserzone Lawnton and the other at Virginia Golf Club.  On Tuesdays I have league (competitive laser tag).  I don’t really have much spare time.  The little spare time I have left is spent with my three horses – Magnum, Mouse & Benny.

VCE Training Day
Last month our VCE’s Lee & Nadine attended a training day and got to meet the newest member to the fleet – Flick.  They also completed training with the ‘Kitchen Fire Simulator’ and the ‘Wildfire simulator’.
Photos include: The ‘Kitchen Fire Simulator’ shows the result of throwing a small amount of water on an oil fire.

the Wardens’ Word
***ALL FIRES-ongoing request***
The wardens for the areas below are requesting a courtesy call before lighting ANY fire please.  Even fires below the 2x2m permit requirements.  This is ‘not’ mandatory just a safety precaution.  With conditions as they are, any smoke noticed is inspected. So a quick call will save valuable time. Thanks for your co-operation! For our regular readers – Yes I meant to repeat this message.
ALWAYS PHONE ‘000’ TO REPORT EMERGENCIES
FW Gary Fuller passes on his thanks to those residents that have called before lighting up.  It helps us immensely.

…DIDYANO?…
Fire plays a vital role in renewing many South East Queensland ecosystems.  Many plants are stimulated to flower just after a fire.  If you would like to know more check out this website.    www.fireandbiodiversity.org.au
