Pine Rivers resident Sharon Jones, of Bray Park, has competed in a range of rowing regattas the GPS Regatta, Surfers Paradise Regatta, and the Sunshine Coast Regatta with 2nd and 3rd placings in doubles and quads.
Sharon, an assistant coach at previous council Adventure Women and Older and Bolder programs, has completed her Level 1 coaching in 2007 and is currently working toward Level 2 coach accreditation. She has also assisted with the Adaptive Rowing program for people with disabilities.
This adventurous woman said the upcoming program, beginning on March 1st, would offer a "come and try" session including a demonstration rowing machine and an on-water session in club boats.
“There will be ‘tub boats’ suitable for beginners (two singles and a double), as well as some wider or heavier crew boats like quads and fours,” she said.
“After the Adventure Women program, the local Pine Rivers rowing club will offer participants a four week Learn-to-row program on a Saturday or a Sunday morning for two hours a week.”
Sharon’s involvement in rowing all started in mid-2004 when she took part in an Adventure Women Learn-to-row program over five weeks.
“I then rowed in a quad team for a year and a double team for about six months in Brisbane City and I transferred to Pine Rivers Rowing Club at the end of 2005, when I moved to this area,” she said.
“Since then, I have predominantly rowed in a doubles team, training four mornings a week.”
Through her voluntary role as rowing club co-secretary, she has coordinated obtaining a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant (December 2006 round) for almost $30,000 and the club has since purchased three boats suitable for novice women rowers (two doubles and one quad) and new blades (oars).
Bookings for Adventure Women, a program initiated by Pine Rivers Shire Council and delivered by Communify Queensland, open in February.
