A LIONS TALE
So we are back! After much travel we are now settled in to enjoy our wonderful home area. In our recent absence (starting just after I was invested as President in July!), our vice-president Mark has sat at the helm and steered magnificently, especially considering the reasonably short time as a member. Much has been achieved, so apologies for my omissions in this somewhat shorter bulletin.
As Lions ramp up for huge local support of events towards Christmas, then it will soon be all hands on deck. Talking of Christmas, get in early to buy one of the famously delicious Lions Christmas cakes. Lion Maggie of the ECU is our cake-mistress, and cakes can be obtained from her.
Movies: Oct 17th “TOMORROWLAND”
What is this movie about? Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity (Britt Robertson) and a former boy-genius inventor (George Clooney) embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.
Dinner meeting:
The October monthly dinner meeting will be an address by Lions Vice District Governor, Norm Jensen. This is our open dinner meeting evening, and all are welcome to attend. The Governor’s visits are normally a slightly more formal event, and he usually addresses clubs on the broader picture, the aims and direction of Lions International. It is a chance to hear how much the Lions achieve locally, nationally and internationally. It is the world’s largest club. This will be on Wed 28th Oct, 7:00pm,
Other Projects:
In line with our focus on the younger citizens of the town, we are pursuing a few initiatives. We believe youth groups make a considerable impact in ensuring their good direction
The Dayboro Scouts are a well-established cause in this. It is run by volunteers who give a huge amount of time. We are pleased to help support this organisation. They collect drink cans – and we are offering a subsidy of 10c per can collected, in addition to their redemption at the recyclers. In addition, funding of $500 for essential equipment has been provided. The Scouts will be helping at movies for this, as the ethic of their Association is not to receive donations, but to work for them.
Again, sponsoring youth, Lions will be providing a large subsidy the School Chappie’s youth club, for a bus once a term to North Lakes. We recognise that it is difficult for youth between 14-18 years of age here. We are also looking at helping with a camp for them.
We have been contacted by a strong and willing student, looking to help volunteer around the town to meet his commitment to 50 hours community service that all year 11 students at his school (Steiner) are expected to fulfil. Most pleasing. Lion Sue is coordinating this with many other groups around town to maximise benefits.
