June 22nd is also the Uniting Church’s 37th birthday. On that day in 1977 the Uniting Church in Australia came into being, when the former Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia and the Presbyterian Church of Australia united. The new church plumped for the present participle, “Uniting”, because the process of obeying Christ’s will for His church is ongoing. In this spirit, our very good mate Chris Kent from Dayboro’s Catholic community is our preacher during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
We have four churches in Dayboro and one pub. Where I was brought up, the ratio in a country town would have been reversed. If you grumble over your middy (2 for $7, send the bill to Joe Hockey) (anyway, what’s a middy, we don’t drink those in Queensland), “Why can’t they all get together?” Bear with us, we’re doing our best in Dayboro. I wonder a similar thing when I ask why can’t League add their two missing players and Footy drop their extra three so that we can play Union as God intended.
