May2014_ANZAC DAY 2014
TRAILRIDERS REPORT: The Anzac parade started with 14 dedicated riders, Peter, Janelle, Neil, Ken, John, Peggy, Liz, Dave, Gemma, Helen, Raefe, Graham, and Maryanne with Peter Norris and Lorraine Bailey walking in front. Both were a great help on the day.
It was a perfect day weather wise. We rode out of the showground’s on time and arrived at the rear of the hotel without an incident. We joined the parade behind The Lions Club with the Ambulance and Police units following.
On both sides of McKenzie Street were spectators clapping loudly as we passed. The club members were decked out in our new saddlecloths and neckerchiefs with the Australian, New Zealand and British Flags carried at the front.
We were privileged to have Raefe Moss, club member and returned solider from East Timor riding with us.
We returned to the showground and stood at the fence inside the arena, listening to a moving and very entertaining service. Many churches, schools and families of the fallen laid wreathes including our club. A World War 11 plane made several passes overhead at just the right time. To finish off the service the Light Horseman, Malcolm Stubbings fired 2 shots from his 303 rifle. Well guess what followed, horse and riders were all over the arena and even the Australian Flag was dropped.
After the service ended we went to the clubhouse for our own get together with freshly cooked damper, Anzac biscuits and Billy tea. Thanks to Dougal and Christie for all their help and to Debby Chater for bringing a cake. It was good to see Former President and Life Member Selwyn Barr and Lee Tapper join our group for a drink and a chat.
Many relatives and friends came to celebrate with us.
A huge thanks to one and all for making this 2014 Anzac Day special.
Graham.
