March2014_News from UQ Vet

Well here we are steaming towards Easter and Christmas is but a distant memory.  It’s around this time that we start coming to terms with the side effects of all that good cheer, and trying to make good on the New Year’s resolution to lose the extra kilos.

Our pets often share these tasty treats with us but this can be detrimental to their health.  Not only are some of our favourite foods toxic to our pets, but the weight gain also affects every aspect of their health and well-being.

Even being slightly overweight puts your pet at an increased risk of disease, such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.  In fact, obesity is one of the leading causes of heart disease.  The more weight they gain, the less active they become, thereby compounding the problem.

We would generally expect a dog to have reached their ideal adult weight at around one year of age, (depending on the breed).  If you can’t see a waist on your pet when looking down at them, or you can’t easily feel their ribs, it’s a fair indication they are overweight.  A couple of kilos extra on a dog is a significant weight gain.

If you think your little friend might be carrying a few extra kilos you may like to take advantage of our weight loss clinic.  This involves a nurse consultation, free of charge.  Your pet will be weighed and his/her dietary requirements calculated to set you on the path to a healthier waistline.

On that note, some of you may have noticed Katherine’s expanding waistline.  We are expecting little baby Beaton in May and Katherine will leave us for Maternity leave at Easter.  We wish her well on this adventure and look forward to greeting the new arrival.

We have two new staff members we would like to welcome to the team.  Dr Gemma Coleman will be filling in while Kath is away.  Gemma enjoys all aspects of mixed practice and is really looking forward to becoming part of our wonderful community over the next year.  The other new arrival is Dr Margie Bale (nee: Higgins) who will be with us two days a week.  Some of you may remember Margie from her time with us before marriage and children lured her away.  She is thrilled to be back and is really enjoying catching up with all our lovely clients.
