July2012_Birthing Kits Assembly Day Saturday 8 September

1000 Births 1000Lives
In recent years the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers has held a Birthing kits Assembly Day each year for its members and friends to assemble 1000 birthing kits to send to developing countries.  These simple kits consist of six items:-. A plastic sheet, soap, two gloves, sterile scalpel blade, three cords and five gauze squares, packed into a small plastic sealed bag
The bags are then sent to hospitals or regional health clinics in developing countries where they are distributed to women in rural areas who have little or no assistance during childbirth.  Many of these mothers and babies die from preventable infections arising at childbirth.  By providing a clean birthing kit and training in how to use it, the mothers are given the resources to reduce the risk of infection for both themselves and their newborns.
The materials cost $3 per kit and are bought from the Birthing Kit Association (Aust.), www.birthingkitfoundation.org.au who administer the Birthing Kit project and make all arrangements as to which country and into whose safe medical hands the kits should be delivered.  The materials must be paid for before they are delivered for the Assembly Day.
This year the Zonta Club of Pine Rivers is working with Natalie Charlton of Bridgeman Downs, a year 12 student at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, Ascot.
In 2010 Natalie won the Long Tan Award for teamwork, and in 2011 she was awarded the St Margaret’s Foundation Award for philanthropic endeavours.
Natalie used the money from these two awards to purchase the materials for 200 kits, and in May assembled the kits with students at St Margaret’s.  These first 200 kits are already providing women with a safe birthing environment.
Now The Zonta Club of Pine Rivers and Natalie are planning a Birthing Kit Assembly Day on Saturday 8th September and are inviting readers to get involved either by making donations ($3 will buy one kit – $30 will buy 10 kits) or helping Zonta with this project in some other way.
The Zonta Club of Pine Rivers will provide $3000 to make 1000 kits but in anticipation that this will be a much bigger Assembly Day than usual, Natalie is aiming to raise another $3000 so that 2000 kits can be bought and assembled on the day.  An easy way to donate is to visit Natalie’s page on www.mycause.com.au/1000births1000lives
