AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS

Being Australian – a reason for our region to celebrate

Australia Day enables people to display some national pride and there will be lots of opportunity to do that right across the Moreton Bay region on January 26.
Moreton Bay Mayor, Allan Sutherland, has urged residents to attend some of the numerous events on offer to celebrate all that is good about being an “Aussie”.

He said Australia Day 2009 would mark the end of a week of festivities in the region.
“These festivities will range from the Citizen of the Year Awards on Wednesday January 21, at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre, to an Aussie Beach Party in Brennan Park, at Bongaree on Bribie Island, from 7.30am to 9.30pm, a Fun Family Day at Scarborough Beach from 10am to 9.30pm, and the Aussie Arvo event in Pine Rivers Park, Gympie Rd, Strathpine, from 3pm to 8pm,” Cr Sutherland said.
“The Citizen of the Year awards will officially acknowledge residents for their wonderful contribution to the community through sport, culture, community events and improving the lives of others.”
Cr Sutherland said Aussie Arvo would help to kick off the Year of the Blood Donor, due to Red Cross being the community charity for this event.
Now in its third year, Aussie Arvo will be held at Pine Rivers Park, Strathpine. It will offer a range of fun family activities from pig racing to face painting, henna tattoos, thong-throwing, sack races, egg and spoon races, backyard cricket, as well as a lamington eating contest.
There also will be great entertainment with popular tribute band, Gold Chisel as well as local bands Dissonance, the Kelly Gang and Mic Travers band.
Mums and dads can enjoy laidback duo Sizzle ‘n’ Burn (Vern Gibson and Melanie Brennan), country soloist Brett Goodwin, Australian Idol Top 40 contestant Drew Crump and roving entertainers like Ned Kelly. There also will be a beer tent for refreshments.
Cr Sutherland said Redcliffe District’s Family Fun Day at Scarborough Beach also promised to be a great day out. Residents could swim, dance and be entertained into the night. The event is organised by the Scarborough Lights Up Redcliffe Inc group.
This Family Fun Day will feature markets from 10am to 9pm, live music, free kid’s activities including “Your Vision for Australia Flag Art Workshop”, face-painting, Aussie games run by Oyster Point Scout Group, carnival rides, an animal nursery and sheep-shearing displays.
Cr Sutherland said Caboolture District residents could take part in the Aussie Beach Party at Brennan Park, Bongaree, on Bribie Island.
“The day will kick off at 7.30am, with a free breakfast provided by Cornetts IGA and Bribie Lions Club, as a thank-you to the community for their support during the year,” he said.
Residents are invited to bring their family and friends along for a free day of good Aussie tucker, fun, and entertainment including sky divers, markets, thong throwing contests, rides, games and workshops.
Fireworks will light up the sky at 7.15pm followed by an outdoor cinema.
Cr Sutherland said council was proud to provide its residents with free fun outdoor activities and family entertainment in community parks and beaches on Australia Day.
