Samford Valley Probus Club visit to Victoria Barracks
Victoria Barracks proved to be a very interesting and informative day out for the 33 members of our Probus Group, when the Enogerra Barracks visit was cancelled due to security problems. Our group assembled at the guard house near the entrance and was greeted by one of the volunteers who conducted us to morning tea in the beautiful visitors lounge. We had a delicious morning tea of fresh scones, jam and cream. We were given a short address on the history of some of the very old buildings, and what was happening to them, before we set out on our tour around.
Quite a number of the oldest buildings have been condemned due to lack of money required to maintain them in good order, so we were not able to see inside these buildings. Also some have boarded up windows after severe storm damage last November. Several of the buildings are heritage listed.
The museum was very interesting, and we were shown some pieces of military history that had been donated to the museum. Also interesting was the library section where we viewed a number of original newspapers depicting VE Day in Europe and VP Day in the Pacific, with items about the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the aftermath. The group assembled outside the Barracks dining area and many members purchased some of the war books on sale. Most of us then drove to the Gaythorne RSL for a very nice lunch. A most enjoyable day was had by all.
On Thursday 29th October Pine Rivers Probus have invited us to their annual Barefoot Bowls Day event at Club Pine Rivers, Sparkes Road, Lawnton. Morning tea with BBQ lunch is $20 all inclusive. Monies must be paid by Saturday 17th October. We will be departing Samford Bowls Club at 8.15am (car pooling) for commencement at 9am. Please contact Lyle on 3289 7142 or 0411 838 919
