Aug2015_A LIONS TALE
The Dayboro Community continued its normal busy schedule of winter events with the Dayboro Show. The Lions were again involved supporting this event with the usual suspects on the gates and in the kitchens.
The Combined Churches run a weekly social gathering for the elderly of Dayboro at the Uniting Church Hall; it’s called the Conversation Club. The Club has recently become a purely community supported event. The Lions recently joined with the Combined Churches to fund a Diversional Therapist for the next few months whilst a more permanent funding stream can be found. In addition, the Lions collaborated with Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) to buy a number of sturdy chairs for the Uniting Church Hall to ensure that the members of the Conversation Club have a safe place to meet. It was pleasing to note the MBRC’s ability to identify and respond to a community need at this level through a grant.
Preparations for the 2016 Business Directory commenced with possibly the most important step – the selection of the art work to be put on the front page! Ian and Sue Flinders and Jacqui and Stefan Hansson, the art aficionados of the region, had the difficult task of selecting the art work from a competition run by our local State Primary Schools. Jokes aside, the art work was fantastic and the task extremely difficult. The runners up were Jess Thacker-Oldroyd (class 5H Dayboro SS) and Georgia Glentworth (class 5H Mt Samson SS). The winner was Cooper Hartley (class 2L Dayboro SS) with his drawing of a crab; I love the bubbles rising from the small fish!
Lions have for some time been working with the community and police to seek initiatives that result in more inclusive engagement of the youth of the village in society. The outdoor exercise equipment and outdoor table tennis table donated by the Lions also support this project. Recently the Lions funded a weekly exercise class with Amanda of the House of Natural Health and Fitness. For a gold coin donation Dayboro youth could attend an exercise class on Friday evenings. Unfortunately there was poor take-up, only two people appeared, so the program has been discontinued. We are now actively working with the Police (Ken) to arrange running a Blue Light Disco.
Bob Millar our local councillor is thanked for supporting the placement of lights in the Dayboro Lions Park. It will be interesting to see if this improves behaviour; a useful guide on potential solutions for other places where antisocial activity takes place.
NEXT MOVIE: “HOME” on 15th August. Paper Planes will have been screened at the Community Hall, so watch this space next month for the announcement of Dayboro’s own aeronautical engineer, winner of the paper plane building and flying competition.
Madonna gave the Lions an entertaining talk on her work rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals at our May dinner meeting. As a follow up, the Lions donated a washing machine to wash the mountain of marsupial nappies that they regularly use. Madonna and Ben invited us for a social ‘working bee’ where we cuddled small furry animals over a snag and beer; many thanks to Madonna and Ben.
Enjoy the winter chill!
