Zoe saved by observant owners
Zoe’s fur-parents popped in recently when they noticed a small, cherry tomato-sized lump on their special girl. At 10 years old, she is classed as ‘senior’ for a Kelpie X, so they knew to be on the lookout for any changes in her health and appearance.
An on-the-spot Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) and examination by the on-site pathologist revealed it was an aggressive form of cancer called Soft Tissue Sarcoma. Surgery on the lump was arranged for the approaching school holidays, to allow for plenty of TLC and round-the-clock aftercare at home by the family.
By the time the surgery day came around, the lump had grown to larger than a golf ball! Given the aggressive and malignant nature of the cancer, large ‘margins’ were required, meaning up to 3cm either side of the lump needed to be removed as well. Dr Annika & her surgical nursing team spent two hours in theatre completing the thorough procedure & Zoe’s family were able to pick her up that evening.
Zoe has previously had the same type of cancer removed from her back leg in 2013, so her family are extra-vigilant with any lumps and bumps that may arise. If you have noticed a lump on your pet, the Old Mill Animal Hospital can test samples on-site while you wait, and once a diagnosis has been made, we will create an action plan for the best outcomes for your pet and your family.
