Dec2014_TIME TO GET SHADY

It’s shocking, but it’s true – Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world – around 370 skin cancers are diagnosed every day in our Sunshine State!

In Brisbane alone, around 1180 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year and about 110 people will die from the disease.
Skin cancer is largely preventable, and it’s worrying to think that inadequate shade may be putting our kids at risk of long-term skin damage.
We know that proper sun protection during childhood and adolescence reduces lifetime risk of skin cancer – so we need to ensure Queensland kids are best protected every day they’re out and about.
The good news is that you can play a part in turning skin cancer rates around, Brisbane – it’s time to get shady!
Cancer Council Queensland and Queensland Department of Health are calling on not-for-profit organisations and schools in Brisbane to get SunSmart by applying for our 2014 SunSmart Grants Scheme.
The SunSmart Grants Scheme offers funds for portable and permanent shade items for not-for-profit organisations and schools that cater for children up to age 17.
Sun protective behaviours, including seeking shade, are required whenever the UV index is 3 or above. In Queensland, the UV index is above 3 everyday – so sun protection is required throughout every season.
I encourage Queensland parents, students and local communities to get SunSmart and get applying!
Early childhood centres, outside school hours care, youth community groups (eg. scouts, girl guides) and primary and secondary schools across Queensland wishing to apply can find further information at cancerqld.org.au  – click on the Prevention tab, then follow the skin cancer link to find out more about the grants scheme.
Applications for the current round of funding will close at 5pm on Friday, February 13 2015.
There are no shortcuts – take care in preparation for outdoor activity and remember that one method of sun protection is never enough!
More information about Cancer Council Queensland and being SunSmart is available at www.cancerqld.org.au  or via the Cancer Council’s 13 11 20.
