Zonta Club of Pine Rivers recently held a sewing bee to make mastectomy cushions for women recovering from breast cancer surgery.
The members spent an enjoyable day of sewing and fellowship producing 50 cushions that were donated to North West Hospital at Everton Park.
The sewing bees are held on a regular basis to ensure hospitals have a supply of cushions to give to their patients. “Breast Cancer cushion making is just one of the projects that the Pine Rivers Zonta Club members work on to improve the womens’ quality of life locally” said Pine Rivers President Jan Spittle.
“A further example of our work in improving womens’ quality of life is our club’s financial sponsorship of the air fares to and from home for each school holiday period of Shekyra, an 11 year old girl from the Cape York Indigenous community of Kowanyama, so she can have a broader education experience” Ms. Spittle said.
The sewing day was an even more special day for our club, because Shekyra and her foster mother Lisa Bodwin were able to visit us during the day. Shekyra is living with Lisa and her family and they have close ties to Shekyra’s family and the Kowanyama community” said Ms. Spittle.
Ms. Spittle said “Shekyra has settled into her new school environment and is already proving to be a keen sportswoman– so watch out Cathy Freeman”.
Our club also sponsors other projects in the Kowanyama community in the form of financial assistance to fund school camps for the children and the donation of clothes for the community to sell at their local flea market” Ms Spittle said.
Those women interested in finding out more about our local and international projects that assist in improving the quality of life and raise the status of women and girls can contact either Rosalind on 3285 3294 or Jan on 3359 8237.
