TICK SEASON KICKS OFF
Don McConnel administering the new Cydectin Long Acting Injection
With spring marking the unofficial start of cattle tick season, farmers need to think about controlling tick numbers now before they peak in the coming months. Local farmers are now using a new method for tick control, with the added benefit of providing 120 days protection against a number of major parasitic worm species.
Presently, there are numerous pour-on and injectable drenches on the market, many of which give limited control of cattle tick. One treatment, however, has recently been proven to give 28 days control of cattle ticks, the longest of any endectocide drench. Called Cydectin Long Acting Injection for Cattle, the treatment has been used by Don McConnel on his Droughtmaster Stud at Mt Brisbane.
“I’ve seen a dramatic improvement in results from pour-ons I’ve used previously. Cydectin LA Injection has given our cattle longer protection from ticks and internal parasites. On our property, we’ve noticed a dramatic improvement over other treatments we have used,” Mr McConnel said.
Cattle ticks also affect farmers’ ability to relocate livestock. Farmers who move cattle from Queensland’s tick-free and tick-control zones are required to take stock through Biosecurity inspections. Cydectin LA Injection has a full claim for control of cattle tick, and so is approved in Queensland as a preliminary cattle tick treatment for stock crossing the tick line from an infected zone into a cattle tick-free zone. It should be used six to nine days prior to presentation at the tick line, if used as the last preliminary treatment.
Administered by an injection under the skin on the back of the ear, Cydectin has a unique oil-based formulation that prolongs the absorption of its active ingredient from the injection site, giving it the longest persistent activity claims of any drench. It controls barber’s pole worm, nodule worm and lungworm for 120 days, brown stomach worm for 112 days, and stomach hair worm for 72 days. In comparison, most other commonly used injectable drenches only offer up to 28 days protection. The benefit of this longer protection is greater productivity through improved growth rates due to longer parasite control.
Mr McConnel said, “Our bullocks are a lot happier, are not experiencing stress, and are getting the full nutrients from their food. They are putting on extra weight earlier – we’re now selling our bullocks a year earlier. We’re also handling the cattle less often, which frees us up to do more around the property.”
