THINK BEFORE YOU FLICK
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland has urged residents not to throw their cigarette butts out car windows this summer, following a recent incident at Narangba. A thoughtlessly thrown smouldering cigarette butt can cause a fire in minutes – a cigarette butt thrown from a vehicle on the Bruce Highway ignited a grass fire which spread to a timber yard where several bundles of timber caught fire.
Speedy response by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) prevented things from getting far worse.
“If it hadn’t been for the speedy response of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS), things could have been far worse.
People are urged to be extra careful in this hot weather. Make sure cigarettes are extinguished properly and disposed of responsibly.
Fines of $300 for littering and $400 for throwing cigarette butts from a vehicle in times of high fire danger my apply.
The Department of Environment and Resource Management and council staff have ensured that waste water used to fight the fire has been contained safely on site.
Council has taken samples which will be tested this week. Once the results are received, the waste water will be treated appropriately.
