Dementia Research Funding and Dementia Awareness Month
More than 300,000 Australians are now battling a form of dementia, with around one in every 11 people over 65 suffering from the devastating illness. The number is forecast to grow to one million by 2050 and dementia is now the third leading cause of death.
Dementia is a cruel disease that attacks the fundamentals of who we are – it can erase the memories of those we cherish and the experiences that have defined us.
As Health Minister I recently announced the opening of a new round of dementia research grants, and invited teams of researchers to apply for new Dementia Research Team Grants worth up to $6.5 million each over five years.
The research grants will support new research into big themes: the causes of dementia, improved methods of prevention and early diagnosis, new treatment options and ways to improve quality of life for patients and their carers.
Following the huge success of Dementia Awareness Week in 2013, this year September has become Dementia Awareness Month.
Dementia Awareness Month will focus on creating dementia-friendly communities and initiatives to improve inclusiveness for people living with dementia and those close to them. It will promote a better understanding of the steps individuals and businesses can take to ensure dementia suffers are engaged in the community.

Legacy Week – 31 August to 6 September
Legacy Week was first held in 1942 and is the annual national appeal to raise awareness and funds for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans.
Funds that are raised through donations and the purchase of badges assist approximately 100,000 widows and 1,800 children and people with disabilities Australia-wide. Funds go to the provision of vital services such as counselling, special housing, medical services, advocacy and social support.
I encourage residents to open their hearts and their wallets and contribute to the campaign. For more information you can visit www.legacy.com.au
Dayboro War Memorial Association ANZAC funding boost
The Dayboro War Memorial Association will be one of the local organisations benefiting from a $125,000 injection of Commonwealth grants to support a number of ANZAC Centenary projects.
To help Dayboro commemorate the ANZAC Centenary; a grant of around $16,000 will be flowing to the Dayboro War Memorial Association for the inclusion of a Memorial to the existing site.
The funding will allow four RSLs to carry out unique and inspiring projects to honour the ANZAC Centenary and ensure the ANZAC spirit and tradition lives on in our community. Successful ANZAC Centenary grant applications were:
Dayboro War Memorial Association Inc – Inclusion of a Memorial to the existing site.
Pine Rivers District RSL Sub-Branch – to rededicate and plant new trees along Anzac Avenue.
Samford RSL Sub-Branch – Avenue of Honour
Bray Park-Strathpine RSL Sub-Branch – Memorial Service to remember Australia’s declaration of World War I.
ANZAC Day 2015 will be the most significant remembrance event of our lifetimes, and will see the community come together to ensure the sacrifice and service of our defence personnel will never be forgotten.
