ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Avril Towerton, Artist of the Month for September, began life in Melbourne, and later in Brisbane. As a child she had a strong interest in art, and won prizes for her work. After a career nursing, Avril returned to explore this early interest.
Over the past decade she has been active in pursuing knowledge and expertise, attending workshops and schools and experimenting with a variety of mediums.
Avril’s preferred mediums have been oil paints and watercolours, and her favourite material has come from land and sea scapes, including old buildings. She loves the colours of the land and using light and shade to enhance the moods of her subjects. She has won prizes in Art Shows and exhibits her work locally.
Of late, she has been working with glass, designing and making jewellery, dishes and bowls.
“I find this most exciting and very challenging. I love the vibrancy and the textures that can be created with glass,” says Avril of her glasswork.
Avril’s story demonstrates again the talent and skill of our local artists, the variety of work that can be found in the Dayboro Art Gallery. Open 7days a week from 10am to 3pm. We would love to see you there.
