Sept2014_A LIONS TALE

Well, as spring approaches, Dayboro Lions turn their attention to preparation for the busy pre-Christmas activities. Lions Christmas cakes have been ordered, and other support, logistic and financial is being organised.
Our current strong executive have  a diverse set of talents, and I must mention Dave, Teresa & Dugi who are providing advocacy for Dayboro township at Council and State level, to ensure the town gets its fair bite at the biscuit regarding resourcing and recognition.

Movies:
Like most events at this rain-drenched weekend in August, attendance was low.  As the movies are  run as a community event and not as a fundraiser, we can support occasional  loss-making evenings such as this.
The movie to be screened on Saturday 27th September – (Note: it is the 4th Saturday, not 3rd this month) is to be Peabody & Sherman.. An animated box-office hit.
Remaining proposed movies for this year are:
27 Sept (4th Sat):  Peabody & Sherman
18 Oct: Rio 2;  15 Nov: Postman Pat ;  Dec: no movie
Please check the Police notice board, shop windows, local papers and the street signs during movie week.  Or email dayboro.lions@gmail.com to check, or to suggest movies to show.
Lions maintain equipment for community use.  This month saw several loans, including shades, BBQs, etc for the Tennis Club function, string lights to enhance the Mt Samson school disco, many ambulant and other medical equipment aids organised at no charge through John’s Hire Connection outlet, security cameras around town, and of course the ongoing emergency alarm necklace scheme.
Expenditure approvals:  The meeting again approved expenditure on several local community causes – including support for Dayboro School yearbook, and we will be providing a perpetual shield and an award for the school leaver  who displays the best community spirit.
Early on the morning of 10th August, Dayboro Lions provided the breakfast at the 50km break for the epic 100 mile (163km)  Sunday Bike ride to raise funds for LYAEC -the Lions youth emergency accommodation centre.  Over 50 fit cyclists chose this longest route, and altogether with the shorter options, raised over $25,000 for the project.  Interestingly, the first pack were all age 50..70+ years, with the tail enders being the younger participants.  Dare I say older guys rule?  My admiration goes out to them all – both for achieving the success of completion, and for paying a large sum to do it.

Our open dinner meeting on Speaker for 24th Sept is our local Member Seath Holswich or/and our Lions District Governor (tba) and, as usual, all are welcome.  There is no charge, but if you wish to order a meal on arrival at a cost of $12, it is a beef stew.
Exercise equipment:  Following the success of the Gaming Fund grant, the purchase and installation of the fitness enhancements are being vigorously pursued by Dave, Dugi & Teresa.  They have had meetings with the Council, and no doubt will provide the best possible solution.
Lions recognise those from other organisations who give over and above to support the Dayboro community, and chose several to reward them for their efforts with an invitation to join us at the Dayboro Players’ production.  The Lions provided additional support by providing the bar staff at this event.
Lions Clubs International, our parent body with 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members make us the world’s largest service club organization.  We’re also one of the most effective.  Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities.  Everywhere we work, we make friends.  With children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat and with people we may never meet.  We continue spending millions of dollars worldwide, with our contributions helping people all around the world by providing national and international disaster relief, saving sight, preventing measles, supporting youth and meeting humanitarian needs.
And finally, our major fundraiser to carry out all of the activities mentioned here- and heaps more – is the Lions  Dayboro and District Directory.  This is an annual publication of distribution 3000 copies to all district households.  Most of us keep it handy and it is the first point of call for any local services required, or purchases.  PLEASE HELP THE COMMUNITY WHILE ENHANCING YOUR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE WHOLE YEAR, BY ADVERTISING IN THIS PUBLICATION.  Many thanks to those who give us continuing support.  Info on this is via North Pine Printing Ph: 3881 3704, who have details elsewhere in this Grapevine.
….More Next Month
