DAYBORO HERITAGE TRAIL:
Marker 6 – Riek Bros. Store
Brothers Wilhelm and Christoph Riek owned and operated their store from early 1900 until the business was sold to the Silverwood Dairy Factory Co. Ltd. in 1907.
The English, Scottish & Australian (E.S. & A.) Bank Limited opened a branch here in 1912, adding a Bank Manager’s residence. By 1936, the building had been extended twice more.
The E.S. & A. branch was taken over by the ANZ Bank, finally closing for business in the mid-1990s.
A couple of days after the launch of the Dayboro Heritage Trail in December last year, our Society was fortunate enough to be donated three more photographs of this building in its various stages, photographs that we had not seen before. They were in one frame and we have had them re-mounted and put back into the original frame and they are now hanging in “Dayboro Cottage”. I have included the oldest of these photographs with this article as it would have been taken c. 1912 when the E.S. & A. Bank was first established.
It was my privilege on Saturday 20th July to join Michael and Pauline Cruice and their family at their property “Tullamore” Hay Road, Dayboro, to celebrate their family’s 100 years’ ownership of the property. “Tullamore” is part of Portion 4 Parish of Whiteside which was originally selected by brothers Henry and John Raynbird in 1868, Selection 44, comprising 640 acres which extended from Rush Creek to Terrors Creek. On 13th June 1913 ownership was transferred to Cruice Bros. It is interesting to note that over all this time ownership has really only been vested in two families, Raynbird and Cruice.
And that brings me to our next family research day. It will be held on Friday 13th September and it will be the Raynbird family. If any readers have any information on this family, it would be very much appreciated if they would get in touch with our Society. Should you wish to attend the family research day, please RSVP by Monday 9th September.
