Rodz Rock n Roll Transam features in vampire movie

To see Paul’s 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans-am and hundreds of other hot rods and classic cars visit Rodz Rock ‘n’ Roll event on May 23 at Strathpine.
Paul De Zubicaray from Albany Creek is living the dream – driving a black and gold 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans-am, creating beautiful artworks and playing in a heavy metal band “The Cattledogs.

Paul, also a well known cartoonist, has entered his treasured Trans-am in this year’s Rodz Rock ‘n’ Roll event, on Saturday May 23 in Pine Rivers Park, in Strathpine.
His car is one of more than 250 classic cars and hot rods being buffed and polished for this popular annual car event, which is part of the 22nd Pine Rivers Festival – May 22 to 31.
Paul, who is married to Karyn and is a Dad to Roxanne, 15, and Jay, 11, was discovered as a teenage artist by cartoonist Larry Pickering.
Since then his cartoons have been published in several of Australia’s largest newspapers.
Paul’s paintings can be found in boardrooms, clubs and homes all over Australia.
He is proficient in oils, caricature, pen and ink, as well as animation.
As a teenager, he watched television shows like “Knight Rider” in which actor David Hasselhoff drove a cool “talking” 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans-am, called KITT.
Paul also loved movies like “Smokey and the Bandit” featuring a black1977 Trans-am with golden eagle paintwork, driven by actor Burt Reynolds.
This golden eagle on a black Trans-am, one of the most iconic automotive symbols in American film history has been duplicated on Paul’s car.  His ‘pride and joy’ has just received a new paint job after taking part in a vampire movie “Daybreakers.”
Paul said “Daybreakers” featured a variety of top American and Australian movie actors such as Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Vince Colissimo, and Claudia Karvan.
“It is an American Lionsgate production made at Warner Brothers Studios on the Gold Coast in 2008 and due for release in January 2010,” he said.
Paul hasn’t always found things easily.  His dream of finding a Trans-am started when he was 15 years old and was only just realised in recent years when he discovered a 1978 Trans-am sitting for a year in a shed in Dubbo.
His wife Karyn wanted a Trans-am, as well.  After some research, her gold special edition 1977 Transam, was imported from the United States for restoration to its original state.  Her car had pot plants growing out of it, when the de Zubicarays bought it.
When the Lionsgate producers of the vampire movie realised Karyn had a car of exactly the make and model required for their film they offered to totally overhaul and return it once the film was completed.
She agreed and it was used for many car chases and crashes, whereas Paul’s Trans-am was treated with more respect and only driven carefully as per his instructions – no stunts at all.  “I told them it could only be used for sensible vampire driving,” he said.
“Muscle cars have really taken off in recent years.  They are an affordable car for middle-aged people.”
