“Rush”
An ‘exclusive Dayboro first – coming straight from the UK’
By Gemma Schuhmann
Rush follows the complex rivalry between Formula 1 drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) leading up to the 1976 Grand Prix.  The two of them first start in Formula 3 before working themselves up to become world champions of their sport.
This film is not just about fast cars.  Its main focus is the odd relationship these two completely different men have with each other.  The cars just add an extra level of excitement.  Considering this film is two hours long, it’s amazing that the level of intensity can last the whole time.  From the start all the way through to the end is exciting and rewarding.  There may be only one minute in the whole film where you’re left bored not experiencing a wide range of emotions.
A huge amount of credit must be given to the actors.  All four lead actors are putting on an accent of some sort.  Both Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth completely embody their roles.  It’s not until the end when real footage from the 70s is mixed in with their performances that you realise how much effort they put in.  Brühl has done such an amazing job that he is almost unrecognisable in his next film The Fifth Estate which is set to be released a month later.
This film has been put together without fault.  Everything looks real.  Most of the crashes were created with CGI (computer generated imagery) but you barely notice.  Even the footage from Lauda’s fiery accident was reshot for the film.  The most impressive piece out of the whole film was the burns makeup after Lauda’s accident.  Be warned, there are some scenes where you may have to look away.  The thing to remember is that even though this is a true story it has been dramatised.  However it still rings true.
Rush is an action packed story with a lot of heart.  It’s much more than just a racing car movie.
