‘No ordinary girl’   by Tamara Nowitzki
In early September the Hon Peter Dutton MP, launched Tamara Nowitzki’s book, “No ordinary girl”.
The book, authored by Ms Nowitzki, tells the inspiring story of her sporting success as a silver medal winning paraolympian and her challenges with physical disability and mental illness.
“This is an inspiring story of overcoming adversity and also a reminder of the simpler times growing up in Brisbane in the 1970s and 80s,” Mr Dutton said.
Community members, family and friends listened as Ms Nowitzki read an excerpt from the book and thanked her supporters on her tough journey.
“Through the publication of my book, I hope it becomes apparent that mental health disorders can happen to anyone,” Ms Nowitzki said.
Ms Nowitzki pointed out that general practitioners are often the first to see symptoms of her condition “Responsive Dystonia” and she hoped that greater awareness would lead to earlier diagnosis for sufferers.
Local Councillor Brian Battersby opened the floor up to other speakers.  Friends and community members spoke with great warmth of their respect for Tamara Nowitzki and her very supportive parents Terry and June.
Mr Dutton plans to send copies of the book to local schools so that school children can learn from the Tamara Nowitzki’s story.
“I look forward to the lessons that our young people can learn from Tamara’s determination and achievements,” Mr Dutton said.
Tamara alluded to future challenges in her book, to promote understanding of disability and mental illness and reducing bullying, a mission that Mr Dutton hopes she will pursue.
