Oct2010 MT MEE NEWS

The Mountain looks a picture for the time of the year – and so does the real bush.  The country we saw on a recent drive to a property outside Augathella and to the Dawson River was a picture, there was crop everywhere and the cattle were in great order.

“Onyer” La Nina!

The Savoyard Singers concert in Mt Mee Hall on Sunday 12th September was really memorable.  The music selected was light, airy and fun.  A glance at the audience found the people with permanent smiles of enjoyment and looking absolutely rapt.  And the sun shone for the traditional afternoon tea on the lawn at interval.
The Singers will be back next year – on roughly the same date.  Try not to miss these talented and delightfully friendly people again.
The Spring Ball in early September went well.  Attendance was good, there were some excellent costumes.  Mike Woollett’s piano sparkled as usual and the supper was well up to traditional standards. Proceeds of nearly $700 were presented to the Woodford Aged Care Centre.  Michelle Knight and Clint Page pulled off the award for the best dressed couple, judged by local member Andrew Powell, Cr Adrian Raedel and his partner Kerry.
As this was being written there was frenzied activity in Robinson Rd and Tidwell Rd in preparation for the marriage of Alana  – elder daughter of Lenore and James Hewitt, and Charles, son of Cynon and Reid Lowe.
The lads decided that the best bucks outing would be a trip to the Birdsville races.  Dads Reid and James went along to keep them in order (ahem).  It is believed that the troop possibly did notice that they were diverted by the weather to Longreach and that there were no horses.  But again, maybe not!  They certainly did have a good time!
Everybody was hoping that it would not rain on the outdoor wedding ceremony, but as this was being written, the forecast was a bit gloomy.  (As the photo on the previous page shows, all went well on the day.  The Editor.)
There is a rumour about that another elder Hewitt daughter is contemplating matrimony – perhaps next May.  Watch this space!
Further activity has been reported in the vicinity of the groom’s parents, where a super fibreglass skid boat and a brand new Hyundai Excel race car have been sighted sharing a shed.  Don’t do it Cynon!
In a further notable Mountain event, the younger Thorn offspring Kate recently celebrated her second birthday.  Somehow, her parents had bad headaches the next day – it must have been the noisy children!
The real news is that by genuine popular demand, we have another Rock and Roll Night coming up in the Mt Mee Hall on 23rd October, with music this time by the “Lights on the Hill”.  See elsewhere in this edition for detail, but book now (Kay, 5498 2104 or Neil/Deb 5498 2148).
Remember too that the Sunshine Coast Orchestra will put on its traditional Christmas performance for us on Sunday November 28th, and that this will again also feature the Sunshine Coast Chorale.  It has been leaked that this performance may also involve dancers performing Offenbach’s revealing “Can Can”.
More of this later…….
Things will soon be happening at the ANZAC memorial at the Dahmongha Look-Out.
The Woodford RSL Sub-Branch and the local people who did the original work are keen to respond to requests that the Mountain people who have seen active service be listed at the memorial.  It is also planned that plaques be added for those servicemen who lost their lives on active duty and are not already commemorated.
Funds are available for this work.
By design, the memorial features local natural materials and the aim is to continue that theme, using a local ironbark log as a low wall on which to mount the material.
Negotiations with Council are continuing.
Since presenting the cardiac defibrillator to the community, the Mt Mee Community Watch has been fundraising for an Oxy Viva to complement the resuscitation unit.  Their very successful stall at the recent federal election booth has set them well on their way.  Perhaps this is the only real plus to come out of the entire abortive election exercise!
Finally, the column has learned that the ever modest, shy and retiring Mountain author and man about town Peter Wise ‘Googled’ himself the other day.  He was surprised to find that he was listed, and that the entry included an extract from a Grapevine edition of Mt Mee News, referring to his first book.  We are famous!!
