Oct2010 BACKYARD MOTOR DEALER HOTLINE
LAUNCHED BY FAIR TRADING
State Member for Pine Rivers, Carolyn Male MP, is encouraging local residents and businesses to use the new Office of Fair Trading hotline to report unlicensed motor dealers who are not operating in accordance with the law.
Carolyn Male MP said the hotline was developed as part of the Operation Turner investigation launched in March 2010, targeting backyard motor dealers and odometer tamperers.
“It’s time for the community to get together to eliminate these dodgy motor dealers,” Carolyn Male MP said.
“OFT relies on the community to provide information to get rid of the shonks in the used car industry, in addition to gaining intelligence from a variety of sources.”
“I encourage people to call the hotline on 3115 1726 to report anyone involved in safety certificate scams, unlicensed motor dealing or odometer misrepresentations.”
“By not reporting it, you could be putting your family and others at risk.”
“The types of vehicles sold by unlicensed motor dealers are often of a lower quality and may be repairable write-off vehicles that have been significantly damaged in accidents, repaired and sold to unsuspecting customers.”
Operation Turner has so far prosecuted 10 people and obtained fines of $51,000 for unlicensed motor dealing and odometer tampering.
“When purchasing a second hand vehicle, the OFT encourages customers to have it independently inspected by a mechanic,” Carolyn Male MP said.
“It is important for consumers to carry out a Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) check and a Transport and Main Roads Vehicle Check (Vcheck) when considering purchasing to avoid being caught out.”
To make a complaint about anyone involved in safety certificate scams, unlicensed trading or odometer tampering call 3115 1726, or go to the website, www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au
