DAYBORO TO GAIN PARK FITNESS EQUIPMENT
Following representations from the local Lions Club and other residents, planning has been underway to include a 6 piece outdoor fitness complex in Tullamore Park in the vicinity of the existing bicycle training facility.

The Lions Club has been able to source funding from the Gaming Community Benefit Fund, Progress Association, a private benefactor and its own resources which will be supplemented by funds I have been able to include in my 2014/15 Council budget.  The existing initiative has been going through a process of consultation with the Lions Club and with equipment shortly on order will see installation take place in the next few months.  This project is yet another example of various stakeholders working together to achieve positive outcomes for our community.
MAGPIES – CAUTION
The peak magpie nesting season is currently underway and will continue for the next few weeks. Council has installed signage at known “hotspots” to advise members of the public of the presence of the nesting birds.  Magpies are a protected bird and the best advice is to stay away from their nesting area.  Some helpful information is available at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/magpies
ARE YOU BAGGING RECYCLING?
Moreton Bay Regional Council is reminding residents to place all recyclable paper, cardboard, food and beverage packaging loosely into your recycling bin.  Plastic bags should not be used to contain recyclables as they will only end up in landfill.  In this safety conscious time, the people sorting your recyclables from 143,000 household wheelie bins around the region are unable to open plastic bags to sort the contained recyclables.  Also make sure you check what is accepted in your household recycling bin on your local Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/waste .  What is recycled in one Council region can be different to living in another Council region.
CONGRATULATIONS SERGEANT KEN
What a great thrill it must have been for Ken Robinson and the community he serves so well to hear that he had won the Neighbourhood Watch officer of the year at the recent Neighbourhood Watch Annual State conference in Caloundra. We are so lucky to have Ken and Paul looking after our local community. Congratulations Ken.
AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2015
Do you know of someone who freely gives of their time? MBRC 2015 Australia Day Awards pays tribute to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to their local community and/or achieved exceptional results in sporting, environment or cultural endeavours.  Nominations close on Friday 21 November 2014.  For more information and to nominate online visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ausawards  or pick up a nomination form from council’s libraries and customer service centres.
BUSHFIRE AND STORM READINESS
Across the 2,037 sq kms of the Moreton Bay Region that Council owns or controls, there are extensive land holdings that require ongoing maintenance, be they parks or open space reserves.  This maintenance can also include hazard reduction burning of these properties, and council has been undertaking burns at a number of locations across our region, in many cases with the assistance of our local volunteer Rural Fire Brigades.  With the bushfire season in full swing, it is also timely that residents in the more exposed areas of our region ensure that they are well prepared for not only the possibility of fires but also storms and floods.  Extensive information is available from Council’s website under Disaster Management.
DID YOU KNOW?
A significant proportion of native fauna species are dependent on tree hollows for shelter and breeding.  Prior to European settlement the density and diversity of hollow bearing trees would have been significantly greater than that currently observed.  Most local native tree species take 80-150+ years for the creation of suitable hollows. In addition, fallen trees with hollows also provide important habitat for ground dwelling fauna.
