Mayor Allan Sutherland said the plan had been adopted by council following an annual review, as required by the Queensland Government.
“The plan focuses on possible hazards and necessary preparations with key agencies and the community to minimise the potential for damage or harm,” the Mayor said.
In accordance with the Disaster Management Act 2003, the plan has been annually reviewed and updated to include:-
An escalation model for activating the Local Disaster Management Group – Alert, Lean Forward, Stand Up and Stand Down.
The new structure and membership of the Local Disaster Management Group including the operational response, local recovery and communications sub-groups and the addition of the Local Recovery Coordinator.
Risk assessments of threats and hazards, and the framework of sub-plans to address likely events such as severe storms, floods and bushfires.
Detailing which agency would take the lead role such as Biosecurity Queensland in an event such as Hendra virus.
Mayor Sutherland said the plan was risk-based and will continue to be updated following the outcome of council’s Natural Disaster Risk Assessment Study.
"Key preparations are in place for the storm season with the development of the new MoretonAlert system,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“MoretonAlert will have the capacity to send registered users an alert text or voice message, e-mail, web or social media update about flash flooding events or major dam releases.
“Residents must register to receive an alert by going online to the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s website and filling out the form www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/MoretonAlert
“Council has developed a communication protocol with Seqwater to ensure timely advice is provided about major dam releases from North Pine dam.”
