MT MEE NEWS Sept09
by Ian Wells
Saturday night the 22nd of August saw a packed hall for the Mt Mee Rock and Roll dance. There were loud guitars, a wailing tenor sax, drums aplenty and a solid mass of old rockers writhing on the dance floor. Then there were hot dogs, Coca Cola – and a modicum of more conventional beverages from the bar.
Many dressed in period gear – some of the get-ups were great. Reid Lowe was straight out of “Grease” – Brylcreem and all, and Sue and Mike Hickey were absolutely classic as disciples of the 60s Peace movement. Prizes should have been awarded by “Elvis” to the best dressed couple on the night, but somehow we never actually got round to it.
Greg Henderson’s “Stone Lane” was as ‘rock’ as the name promised, the music swung hard all night, and Nick Comino’s ‘Elvis Parsley’ cabaret act had people alternately listening in awe and rocking on the floor with laughter – there was hardly a dry seat in the house!
What a great night! It was helped by the recent decision of the Mt Mee Hall Committee to outlay a substantial sum of money on lighting for the main stage. The R&R was its maiden run, and despite some very stressful hiccups we got it running in time. It certainly created ambience which was missing under the previous naked fluoro tube. As it shakes down, the lighting will get plenty of work at the usual monthly dances as well as during special functions and it will be a very welcome addition to recent Hall improvements.
On that subject, the Hall Committee has just engaged an architect/builder to look at the possibility of placing a deck alongside the supper room – particularly, (but not only), to provide badly needed additional seating for those indulging in the Country Kitchen at the monthly markets. A scale plan of the existing Hall structure would be a helpful start, but so far neither Council nor Hall records have coughed one up.
Bookings are coming in well for the Savoyards concert on Sunday 13th, but there is still plenty of room. The Savoyard Singers do easy listening favourites from the shows. They do them well and they are very good fun on stage. In short, they are a very talented and wonderfully light- hearted group, so don’t miss them.
Rod Thomas the dogger has claimed another four scalps in the last week or two – three in the Freds Rd area and one in Settlement Rd. But dogs are still wreaking havoc – five of ten new calves born on one Settlement Road property were taken over a few days during August. Ray Johnson reports that a local joint landholder/forestry baiting exercise is planned for early October. Details to come.
Please keep reporting any sightings or signs of dog activity to Ray Johnson at Council on 5420 0100 – without reports he cannot extract resources from the system. For help with specific problems or sightings, ring Rod immediately. His numbers are 0400 018 949 or 3142 0765. Remember that Rod will not enter your property without your overall written agreement plus a clearance on the day – and keep those support cheques made out to the Mt Mee Cooperative Dog Fund rolling in to your writer.
A recent meeting of Cr. Adrian Raedel, Neil Eiby of the Woodford RSL and some locals at the Mt Mee Look-Out settled on a site for the promised flag pole. It will be placed alongside the access road near the “Lone” pine tree and with the tree it will be the focus for future Anzac Day ceremonies. Thank you Councillor Adrian!
And finally, a well researched comment by the Mountain’s elder fish statesman on the winter whiting fishing at the mouth of the Caboolture River under “Hard Hatted Anna’s” new zonal arrangements.
.. . . ”It’s buggered”!
