If you have ever visited a CWA meeting you may have noticed a little dish placed in the centre of the table and members placing a few coins in it. This is our Pennies for Friendship. The voluntary contribution originated in 1939 with the ‘penny’ being the smallest coin that could be donated. Across the country and around the world these small offerings trickle in and are the main source of income to fund the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW). These donations ensure that the ACWW’s essential work continues. The fund is used to:
Promote and empower women in agriculture, and active participation in decision making,;
Improve their living conditions, sustainable food production and food security;
Provide financial assistance for small-scale development projects that directly involve and benefit women;
Maintain links with the United Nations and also organise conferences and events.
All of this wonderful, international work begins in a humble collection dish like the one on the centre of our meeting table each month. Wow!
In conjunction with our May meeting on Tuesday 20th May we will be holding our Handcraft Competition. There’s over 50 categories to enter with nearly half of them devoted to different forms of embroidery. I had no idea there were so many varieties and there are still many dedicated ladies around the country determined to keep these traditions alive. If classic stitching is not your thing don’t be put off, there are also sections for soft craft, sewing, beading, jewellery, mosaics, painting, scrapbooking, cardmaking and more. Winning entries in our branch competition will go on to further judging at district and state level. Anyone can enter, please email stephsinc@gmail.com for a copy of the schedule.
Our evening ladies will be meeting on Wednesday 21st May at the CWA Hall in Dayboro for a Craft Evening. New faces are always welcome. Materials will be provided, just bring a few dollars to cover costs and enjoy a light supper and great company.
I’m sure everyone is looking forward to Dayboro Day on Sunday 25th May. The Antique and Collectable’s Fair is held at the Showground on this day and the CWA will be running the canteen. Be sure to stop by to support us and enjoy some hot food and cold drinks.

Craft
1st and 4th Fridays of the month from 9.30am in the CWA Hall. Cost $3 with teacher available if you would like to learn. All welcome, bring lunch and enjoy a cuppa and chat.
Recipe of the month:
Easy Apple Slice
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups diced apple with skin left on (red, green or use both)
1 cup self raising flour
½ cup raw sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons cinnamon
pinch salt
¼ cup olive oil
½ cup broken walnuts or pecans
METHOD: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Tip the sticky mix into a lined slice tray and gently press down. Bake at 180 degrees for about 30 minutes. This makes a lovely moist cake type slice packed with apples! It can be enjoyed cold as a snack or warm with custard.
