AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is celebrating its 20th year this year and, to date, has raised an incredible $110million dollars towards research and programs to help fight cancer.  The official date for the morning tea this year is the 23rd of May, but events can be held anytime in May and June.  If you would like to host a morning tea or find a local event close to you, visit the website: www.biggestmorningtea.com.au.  Alternatively, you can donate directly to the Cancer Council online.  Cancer Council Australia works closely with the states and territories to fundraise much-needed money, to support patients and their families, as well as research to find the cause of cancer. 

NATIONAL FAMILIES WEEK 

The week of the 15th of May is National Families Week 2013, which celebrates the vital role that families play in our nation. This year’s theme is ‘Families working together:  Getting the balance right.’  The week aims to encourage everyone to think about the way families can work together to achieve a happy and healthy lifestyle.  If you would like to attend a local event in celebration of National Families Week please visit the Families Australia website for more details: www.familiesaustralia.org.au/familiesweek/index.

MY JOINT PAIN 

Osteoarthritis affects nearly one in eight Australians, and can cause pain, disability and loss of independence.  To help try and ease osteoarthritis pain and take a proactive role in managing the disease, the Bupa Health Foundation and Arthritis Australia have partnered to develop a world class, easy-to-use website for all Australians suffering from joint pain.  The website will help reduce and manage chronic pain and improve sufferers overall health and function.  The website, www.myjointpain.org.au has the capability to deliver a personalised osteoarthritis report card, which is unlike any other tool in the world.  The report card is a great resource to help manage their osteoarthritis with their doctor or healthcare professional.

YOUTH 4 NEPAL

The Youth4Nepal team left Australia on the 1st of April to spend the school holidays volunteering in an orphanage in Nepal.  I was lucky enough to meet with some of the team before they left, and donated a 2012 signed Broncos Jersey to their fundraising auction.  The team of six will spend 10 days volunteering and learning about the struggles of a developing nation.  I was delighted to assist the team and look forward to hearing their stories when they return.

OPENING OF THE LAWNTON COUNTRY MARKETS MEDICAL CENTRE

I recently had the pleasure of opening a new medical centre in Lawnton.  The centre is located on Gympie Road and offers patients allied health services, three doctors and 100% bulk billing.  These medical centres provide vital services to our community and it is great to have another one opened in Dickson.
