minister_dutton_from_april_07.jpgAustralia Day Citizenship and Dickson Awards

This year I was the presiding officer at the Citizenship Ceremony, hosted by the Samford Rotary Club. Together we welcomed twenty-seven new Australian Citizens, who had migrated from ten different countries.
Following the Citizenship ceremony I presented my annual Dickson Community Awards, in recognition of those ‘local heroes’ who give so much to our community. This year there were 14 recipients of a Dickson Community Award, with activities varying from swimming to community service.
The award recipients were:
Keith and Fay Madden -Dickson Volunteer Award
Harry Thomson – Dickson Volunteer Award
Rodger Parker – Dickson Community Award
Martin Edge – Dickson Community Award for the Arts
Isabella Gemmell-Morgan – Dickson Community Award for the Arts
Trent Grimsey – Dickson Award for Sport
Eloise Amberger – Dickson Award for Sport
Matthew Stark – Dickson Young Achievers Award
Dr Laura Bray – Dickson Award for Academic Achievement
The Petrie SES – Dickson Volunteer Group of the Year Award
Marissa Lemmer  – Dickson Student of the Year Award
The Dickson Young Citizen of the Year was presented to Brenden Hall and the Citizen of the Year was Tamara Nowitzki.
All of the recipients have contributed above and beyond in their field and their involvement in the Dickson community is remarkable.
Last Month in Canberra
The past month in Federal politics has certainly been eventful. When Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the election date, seven and a half months in advance, the Labor party began to crack. After two senior Ministers resignations and a cabinet reshuffle, they may claim to be refreshed, but it is the same old Labor. Within two weeks the Labor Government has made several announcements which further illustrate their inability to provide initiatives and policies to benefit the Australian people. The increase of 5.6% to Private Health Insurance will place more pressure on already struggling families, the failure of creating revenue on the Mining Tax and the fact that $6.6 billion of your taxes have been wasted on illegal boat arrival cost blow-outs, are just three examples of these Labor failures this year alone.
September 14 will be one of the most important elections for the Australian people. If Labor is re-elected, we will continue down a path of unprecedented waste and missed opportunity. We cannot afford another three years of Labor. This is a great nation let down by a bad Government. Only by electing an Abbott Coalition government can we ensure hope, reward and opportunity that all Australians deserve. I will continue to work hard for an even better Dickson in 2013.
Superfast Broadband Petition
I recently launched a joint petition with Seath Holswich MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, to rally the Federal Government to deliver faster, more reliable internet services to the business areas in Brendale and Strathpine. Currently, business owners and employees fight a constant battle to access average speed internet, through wireless broadband. Sourcing this internet has proven to be time consuming and costly to these businesses.
