Our local community continues to rebuild after the devastation of recent floods.
Thank you again to all of those who have volunteered and particularly our emergency service workers who continue to provide support to many in our community.
For many, the damage has been repaired and life is getting back on track.  However for some the rebuilding process will take much, much longer.  I want to make special mention of those living in the Lacey’s Creek area – that we didn’t lose a single life is amazing.  The devastation though for some, will be something they never get over.  The damage to property and livestock and the general financial hardship will take a long time to recover from.
Now that the day-to-day headlines of the flood and its devastation have gone from view, we need to make sure as a community that we continue to support those who are in need of support.  Once again, any resident who requires assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Australia Day 2011
Twenty four people became Australia citizens, school chaplains from local schools were presented with certificates of appreciation and twelve Dickson residents were recognised with a Dickson Community Award at the Australia Day ceremony in Samford.  Friends and family gathered for a breakfast provided by the Samford Rotary Club to celebrate this important event and to pay tribute to the valuable work done by our chaplains in supporting students and school communities and to acknowledge the contribution and achievements of local people.
Councillor Bob Millar once again was master of ceremonies and joined me in recognising five Dayboro locals for their contribution to the community.  The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Edna Wruck who has been an integral member of the Dayboro community for 65 years.  Volunteer Awards also went to Joy Weston, Carmel Bond, Diane Bell and Alison Taylor who have all given their time and energy to making Dayboro a vibrant and thriving community.
Nomination forms for the 2012 Dickson Community Awards are available on the website at www.peterdutton.com.au or from my electorate office on 3205 9977.
Queensland Denied Health Workers
At a time when Queensland has been hit by natural disasters and it is crucial that health practitioners from doctors, nurses and particularly psychologists are in greatest demand, the Gillard government has let us down.  The Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, must explain why health practitioners, who have been practising for years, through no fault of their own have become deregistered as a result of bureaucratic bungling and are now unable to provide critical services.  Some health professionals have had to close their practices.  Patients cannot claim medicare and private health rebates for services by qualified professionals who they trust and who have cared for them for years.  Minister Roxon needs to come clean with Queenslanders on how many health practitioners have been affected on her watch and when she is going to fix the problem.
World’s Greatest Shave
The Leukaemia Foundation’s 13th World’s Greatest Shave is being held from 10-12 March 2011.  Participants shave or colour their hair to show support for patients and their families and to raise vital funds to help the foundation continue its work.  The foundation provides accommodation, patient transport, funding for medical research and this year aims to focus on the expansion of two accommodation facilities in Brisbane and Townsville.  To sponsor an individual or team, donate or find our more information go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com.au or call 1800 500 088.
Neighbour Day
The ninth annual Neighbour Day will be held on Sunday 27 March.  This day celebrates community and particularly with recent events, will be a great day for us to organise street parties, morning teas or community barbeques.  This is an opportunity to come together to strengthen communities and build better relationships to create safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns.  For further information go to www.neighbourday.org
