LINDAS VINE LINES March 2009

The Queensland State Election has been called for Saturday 21st March 2009.  This will mark the end of my time as the Member for Kurwongbah and I am eternally grateful that I have been given this opportunity.  I wish to thank everyone for your support over the years and I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you.
I know I will see you around as there is no way that I can stay away from such a beautiful place as Dayboro.  I am sure that you’re all aware now that Carolyn Male is the Labor candidate for the seat of Pine Rivers.  I wish Carolyn all the best and I hope she receives the same support that I have been privileged enough to receive.
Over the past 12 years I believe that together we have achieved a lot.  I still fondly remember that Christmas we had the meeting on the verandah of the Crown Hotel with Energex officials to impress the need for a better and more reliable service.  The ingenuity of securing the old Principal’s house for the Outside School Hours Care is still to be marvelled.  Having the Queensland Police Service purchase a house for the second Police Officer was a true community effort at that time.  And while space does not permit a full list I am proud of what has been achieved for the soccer club and the Dayboro Rural Fire Brigade.  All these initiatives and improved services are a result of team effort.  I have been honoured to be considered part of that team.  You have all enriched my life.  Thank you.
What a busy month we have ahead of us.  Apart from the election, it’s International Women’s Day on the 8th of March and this year’s theme is Our Women, Our State.  It is also Foster and Kinship Care Week from the 8th to the 14th of March.  The week aims to celebrate and recognise foster carers, kinship carers, their families and extended networks.  This year’s theme is Create a Smile.
Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grants
I would like to congratulate the Dayboro State School Parents and Citizens Association on their successful application for a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant.  A lot of hard work goes into these applications so it is a wonderful achievement when that hard work pays off.  The Association will receive $27,272 to redevelop the School’s frontage area.  This will include wheelchair and pram access to the school assembly area and office as well as a new and improved bus shelter for students waiting for the bus and parents and carers waiting to pick up their children.
Other grant recipients include $24,500 to the Endeavour Foundation’s Lawnton Adult Training Support Service; $19,619 to Handihome; $30,000 to Holy Spirit Parish at Bray Park; $27,015 to the Living Faith Early Learning Centre in Petrie; $25,790 for Pine Rivers United Sports Club; $12,690 to the Railway Modellers’ Club of Queensland at Brendale; and $25,393 for the Strathpine YMCA Early Childhood Centre.
New Northside Children’s Emergency Department
The Queensland State Government will deliver a brand new, dedicated children’s emergency department on Brisbane’s northside by 2012 – ahead of the opening of the Queensland Children’s Hospital on the southside in 2014.  The new $45.6 million emergency department will be located at the Prince Charles Hospital at Chermside and deliver 12 new emergency treatment bays and a 20 bed short stay observation unit.
Once complete, the Queensland Children’s Hospital will be the cornerstone of children’s health services for the whole state, but the State Government has always recognised that to be a success, it would need to be supported by dedicated children’s services delivered locally.  These new and expanded services will include dedicated specialist doctors and nurses for kids to treat conditions such as seizures and broken bones and stabilise children with more serious problems for transfer to the dedicated children’s hospital.  These new services do not mean that children won’t be seen at other hospitals – in an emergency the best place to take a child will always be the nearest emergency department.
Children’s emergency services will also be strengthened at Caboolture, Redcliffe, Ipswich, Logan and Redlands.  These areas are all experiencing large population growth and additional specialist children’s services will be progressively rolled out in all five communities.
Queensland’s Top 150 Icons
Voting opened on March 2 to see what will be Queensland’s top 150 icons.  From a list of over 700 nominations, the Q150 Short-listing Panel selected 300 icons across 10 categories from state shapers and sports legends to what people think is typically Queensland.  As expected, Q150 icons have sparked plenty of interest and debate and getting the list down to the final 150 will not be an easy task.
Public voting on the Q150 website www.q150.qld.gov.au began on March 2 and closes on April 30.  What do you think should make the cut?  Is it the 1974 Queensland Floods, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Glasshouse Mountains, Pat Rafter, Charles Kingsford Smith, Gateway Bridge or is it the Bowen Mango?  Don’t forget to vote for Tom Petrie and John Oxley in the State-shapers category.  Both played a significant role in shaping our local area and are deserving of nomination.
I look forward to seeing who and what you have all voted for.
For the last time,
Linda
