Kindy children put in an Olympic effort

While the rest of Dayboro was watching the Olympics from their couches, the children at Dayboro Community Kindergarten were in training for their own sporting event – the 2008 Kindy Olympathon.

The Olympathon has become a popular annual fundraiser for the Kindy, with the children – along with some brave parents – lining up for events including walking the plank, a running race, hop scotch, triple jump, high jump, sack racing, weaving, egg and spoon racing, goal shooting and bowling.

The event raised over $1700 for the Kindy, but more importantly provided an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a positive experience with their children.

Kindergarten Director, Robyn Hoban, said the Kindy was thrilled with the level of family participation, which made the event all the more enjoyable for the children.

“It was really fantastic to see just how many parents, grandparents and other family members came along to be part of the two Olympathon days,” she said.

“It means a lot to the children when so many people take an interest in things that are happening in their lives, and that really is what being a community kindergarten is all about.”

The Kindy Olympathon kicked off with a special opening ceremony complete with a parade of teams, and singing the National Anthem.  After that, it was a blur of blue, red, green, yellow and black (Olympic ring colours) as the children hopped, skipped, jumped and ran their way through the day.

Kindy President, Angie Russian, said the two days would not have been possible without the support of generous local businesses.

“We really want to send out a big thank you to the Dayboro IGA, for donating juice for both days and sausages for one of the days; the Dayboro Bakery, for donating bread for both days; Rendezvous, for donating books and drinks vouchers as fundraising prizes; and the Dayboro Butchery, for supplying sausages at cost price,” Angie said.

“And thank you also the all the parents and other family members who helped out with the activities; made signs and pom-poms; painted faces, fingernails and hair; and generally got involved on the days.”

The funds raised will go towards equipment to enhance the Kindergarten program.
