Pool registration deadline extended by 6 months
The Bligh Government has granted a six month amnesty for people to register their swimming pools on the State Government’s pool register
Pool owners will now have until November 4 to record their pool on the register.
Every pool owner needs to check the register at www.dlgp.qld.gov.au/poolsafety or call 1800 340 634 to make sure their pool is registered and their details are correct.
If the register notes there is a pool against that address by displaying a ‘1’, then no more needs to be done by the owner to confirm registration. If there is no pool recorded, the pool owner simply has to click on the relevant link located at the top of the register and enter the details in the pop-up window.
Note: ‘No current certificate’ means that a pool safety certificate (form 23) has not been issued for the property. A pool safety certificate is only required when selling or leasing a property with a pool. If a property with a non shared pool is not sold or leased, the pool owner is not required to have an inspection carried out or hold a valid pool safety certificate. They must simply ensure their pool complies with the new pool safety standard by 30 November 2015.
Penalties may apply for pool owners whose pools are not on the register after 4 November 2011.
A Twitter here, a Flickr there …
I would like to encourage people to sign up for an online learning program demystifying the online world of Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.
The free Looking@2.0 program run by the State Library of Queensland is a great way to become familiar with online technology.
Looking@2.0 is designed to help Queenslanders navigate through online technologies, find new resources, stay safe online and lean. And it’s suitable for people of all ages.
The 11 self-paced and flexible modules let participants learn about the things they’d like to do online, such as photo sharing, podcasting and vodcasting, digital preservation and social networking.
There’s also an incentive to complete modules, with the State Library of Queensland offering some great prizes, including iPads, a digital camera and an iPod touch.
There’s also a major prize draw of two iPad 2s (32GB) and vouchers.
To register, go to www.slq.qld.gov.au/learning
2011 Premier’s Awards for Queensland Seniors
Nominations are now open for the 2011 Premier’s Awards for Queensland Seniors.
These awards honour Queenslanders aged 60 and over whose voluntary work has contributed significantly to their community.
People of all ages can nominate a Queenslander aged 60 or over, who has demonstrated excellence in volunteering, whether it’s through the arts, social welfare, education, health or any other field.
Nominations recognising the diversity of our seniors from rural, regional, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Brisbane during Seniors Week from 20 to 28 August 2011.
Nominations can be made online at www.seniors.qld.gov.au . Nominations close on 17 June 2011.
Fire safety this Winter
Fires at this time of year were often started by faulty or misused heating appliances like heaters, dryers and electric blankets.
For instance, in 2010 QFRS attended 143 residential fires in the Brisbane region during the Winter months, down from 186 in 2009.
Precautions residents can take against house fires could include:
Making sure smoke alarms are installed and well maintained
Ensuring all electrical equipment stored away in summer months is checked by an electrician for faults
Making sure heating devices are kept away from curtains, clothing or any other material
Never operating heating devices when they are unattended
Developing an evacuation plan with members of the household in case a fire breaks out
