June 2010 . . HELP SAVE LIVES
BY FUNDING BIRTHING KITS FOR THIRD WORLD COUNTRIESThe cost to the Zonta Clubs has increased form $1 to $2.
Our club, the Zonta Club of Caboolture, usually packs 2000 kits which have gone to places like Papua, Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and the last ones went to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa.
Because we had set aside only $3000 for this project, we are asking the public to make up the $1000 difference – so that we can again send 2000 of these kits.
The Project originated in South Australia and has been running for about 6 years. Now most Zonta Clubs round Australia make up Birthing Kits to be sent around the world. It involves packing these components into a zip lock bag:
Large piece of black plastic;
Gloves;
Clamps or string;
Soap;
Clean dressings; and
A sterile blade.
These are then sent overseas the distributed in areas where they are needed, to help reduce the infant mortality rates.
Recently on TV, Therese Raine (Mrs. Rudd), was asking the public to help with donations for a kit which cost $220. Needless to say it was a large well equipped kit, but not as practical as these kits in the wilds of Africa.
Dr. Andrew Browning (one of Dr. Catherine Hamlin’s Doctors) spoke to us last year after setting up a remote outpost medical centre in Ethiopia. He said that these basic kits were one of the most valuable resources they have.
Women giving birth have almost no contact with health professionals. Babies are born onto dung (horse or cow) floors and often die of neo-natal tetanus. These kits have made a wonderful difference to infant mortality.
If you are able to assist, all funds will go specifically to this project and receipts will be given from the Club.
