June 2010 . . COUNCILLORS COLUMN

WHERE DO YOU SHOP?
I am often surprised when meeting new residents and sometimes some who are much longer term residents, that they have little knowledge of the services and facilities that our local shops and businesses provide. I have encouraged people to walk the streets of the Village and they often report finding not only the items they did not realise were available, but that the prices were very competitive with the “big shops” over the range. The Village and its environs have been built on small business from the very beginnings as a farming and timber area to its more recent service providers meeting the reasonable day to day needs of its rural and rural residential inhabitants. Most of us like it this way and see little need for this style or level of service to change.
REPORT WILD DOG SIGHTINGS
Council has formed a cooperative working group to deal with wild dog problems in the Mt Mee and surrounding areas. The working group has been set up with representatives from Council, the National Wild Dog Coordinator, EPA, Forestry and a community representative. Keeping your land free of overgrown vegetation will assist in reducing wild dog incidents for you and your neighbours. Residents can now report wild dog sightings on Council’s website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/wilddogs or by contacting Council’s Call Centre on 3205 0555. The report sighting information gathered will allow Council’s Pest Animal Management Officers to initiate management techniques in target areas. Residents are requested to submit as much information as possible on any sightings of wild dogs and/or attacks, including the date, location, description, activity and damage caused.
FREE CONCERT FOR SENIOR CITZENS
The Pine Rivers Brass Band will be hosting their annual free concert for seniors. Enjoy a wide variety of music along with raffles and a complimentary afternoon tea. The concert will be held on Saturday 26 June 2010 at the Strathpine Community Centre between 2.00pm and 4.30pm. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 3886 0429 after 7.00pm.
BECOME A BLOOD DONOR
The Red Cross Blood Service is experiencing severe shortages of blood stocks in all blood groups. Collections have recently been on the decline and blood stocks are low in all blood groups. They are appealing to all Australians to give blood, so please assist if you can. Every blood donation saves lives so please call 13 14 95.
