Birthing Kits
The Zonta Club of Caboolture is again packing 2000 Birthing Kits to be distributed throughout the third world countries.
The packing day will be held in early August in Caboolture and people wishing to assist or to donate to the cost of the kits (each costing $2) can contact Edith Fogg (efogg@bigpond.com.au ) or President Patricia Clunes (streetons@iprimus.com.au )
Each Kit is comprised of gauze, a metre square black plastic ground sheet, soap, gloves, scalpel and sutures. The end product is about half the size of an A4 sheet of paper and ours have been sent to places such as Afghanistan, New Guinea, The Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Malawi and Solomon Islands. Over 300,000 women die in childbirth and for every one death another thirty end up with injuries or a fistula of the bladder or bowel. Ninety-nine per cent of the deaths are in third world countries. Many women give birth on earth floors, which leads to neo natal tetanus infections, so safe births are really a matter of Geography. Just consider how many cesarean births we have in Australia each year. Fistulas are quickly repaired so do not exist here.
The Birthing Kit Foundation operates as a separate identity to Zonta, but most of the Kits are assembled by Zonta Clubs throughout Australia, with help from community volunteers. Over 530,000 have been distributed throughout 26 countries and information about the Birthing Kit Foundation is readily available on the Net.
If you would like further information please feel free to contact Edith Fogg (Project coordinator), phone 3289 4273 or at the email address above.
