From your Federal Member for Dickson
PETER DUTTON
This month will see the new Senate changes take place where the Greens will dominate the Upper House of the Federal Parliament. With the rise in the cost of living and families doing it tough, the struggle will only increase with the Greens pulling the strings. Labor and the Greens have committed to cutting back the Private Health Insurance rebate which will not only add more pressure to the family budget but also put further pressure on our public hospitals and waiting lists. In fact Medibank Private informed the Senate that they stand to lose more members because of these changes than the government has estimated will drop out of all 40 private health insurance companies across the whole country. By introducing the legislation, premiums will go up even higher and the young and healthy will be the first to leave private health insurance which will make it even more expensive for families and the 10 million others in private health insurance. My fear is that this will be the latest policy bungle by the Rudd/Gillard government.
Despite Labor promising in 2007 they would fix our public hospitals, the federal and state Labor governments haven’t even reached a final agreement on their “plan”. Given that Dickson residents have been given an extra hit by the Bligh Government with the impending closure of the Royal Childrens Hospital, it demonstrates that Labor just can’t manage our health system. If you wish to voice your concerns or to get further information about the closure you can contact me or the state LNP candidate for Pine Rivers, Seath Holswich on 0428 077 497.
Carbon Tax
As if we have not had enough waste and mismanagement from this government already, we find out that $12 million was allocated to be spent on an advertising campaign for a tax before it even existed. The lies and deceit around the Carbon Tax just continue to get worse as this government refuses to listen to the people and take the policy to an election. Under the Gillard-Brown Carbon Tax, average power bills are expected to rise by $300 a year, petrol prices to increase by 6.5c a litre and grocery prices to rise by 5%. We are all committed to keeping our environment safe and sustainable but applying a tax on struggling households and small business, driving jobs and emissions overseas to higher emitting economies like China and India just doesn’t make any sense. The Coalition is giving people the chance to have their say through a petition that can be found on my website at www.peterdutton.com.au
Dayboro Day Award Winners
Congratulations to the 2011 Dayboro Day Award Winners who were well deserving recipients of this community award. Local Police Officers Senior Constable Ken Robinson and Sergeant Troy Nowitzki (Special Community Award), Paul Inglis (Resident of the Year Award) and Glen and Karrie Lake of Bowlak Bobcat and Tipper Hire (Business Recognition Award) have all contributed to the Dayboro community and embodied the values and spirit of this town. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Doreen Spillman for all her efforts in organising this wonderful tribute each year. #
Free tax help for low income earners
Local low income earners will again be able to access free help with their tax returns at my office. A volunteer tax helper will assist residents to work through the process of preparing and lodging their tax return.
Tax Help is available to anyone who is classified as a low income earner, which for individuals, is a person who earns less than $50,000.
To make an appointment please contact my office on 3205 9977. All tax returns must be lodged by October 31.
Investigate before you invest
With tax time upon us and the increasing pressures on family budgets I would like to urge constituents to take every precaution when investing. Promoters of dodgy tax schemes may increase their targeting of investors in the current tough financial climate and you could be risking your money as well as having to pay back any missing tax with interest and penalties long after the promoter and your money are gone.
Before investing seek independent advice from a professional advisor or the Australian Taxation Office. Check information and warnings about investment schemes and scams on the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Competition website at http://www.moneysmart.gov.au/scams and Consumer Commission SCAMwatch website at http://www.scamwatch.gov.au . The Taxation Office’s website at www.ato.gov.au/investing has the fact sheet Tax planning – investigate before investing and a new guide called Understanding tax-effective investments.
Finally I look forward to catching up with residents at the Dayboro Show. Please stop by my booth where we will provide information on federal issues and help with any concerns you may need assistance with.
(# Thank you Peter. Just to clarify to Grapevine readers though – my input was the writing of the actual awards presentation speeches. Unfortunately I am unable to more actively participate at this stage.
Credit for the selection of award winners goes firstly to the townsfolk who took the time to send in their nominations, and also to the Dayboro District Progress Association’s Executive who formed the decision-making team. Doreen.)
