NRMA Insurance Community Grants program
NRMA Community Grants program offers four areas of funding: crime prevention, road safety, emergency readiness and response, and environment.  Now in its 7th year in Queensland, the program has supported some innovative projects and helped well over 100 community groups. Applications are welcomed between 2 March and 31 March and can be made by going to www.nrmaqld.com.au/grants
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March each year and is a timely reminder of the important role which women play in our lives and communities. 
World’s Greatest Shave
The 11th Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave is being held from 12-14 March 2009, and people will be shaving or colouring their hair to show support for patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myelomas and related blood disorders.  To get involved you can collect a registration brochure from my office, go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088.
National Playgroup Week
National Playgroup Week will take place from 22 to 28 March 2009 with the theme this year being, “Playgroups: bringing families together”.  Playgroups are a community success story in Australia, with over 8,300 meeting regularly each week in venues such as community centres, halls and maternal and child health clinics. Earth Hour
At 8.30pm on Saturday 28 March 2009, people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour, Earth Hour, to demonstrate that by working together we can make a difference in the fight against climate change.  For more information go to www.wwwf.org.au
Neighbour Day
Don’t forget Neighbour’s Day on Sunday 29 March.  The day aims to develop better relationships with the people who live around us and encourage closer, friendlier relationships between neighbours.  By promoting safer, tolerant towns we can break down barriers and protect the elderly, vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Neighbours have celebrated by holding barbeques, street cricket, morning teas and gardening competitions.  For ideas on how to celebrate Neighbour Day go to www.neighbourday.org

Local Sporting Champions Program
The Local Sporting Champions Program offers up to $500 for individuals and $3000 for a team competing in an official state or national sporting competition that is endorsed by the relevant Australian Sports Commission (ASC) recognised national sporting organisation, or national school sport competition.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 12 and 18 years of age at the time of the sporting competition, have to travel greater than 250km return to participate, be an Australian citizen and must not be participating in a professional competition that involves prize money.
Individuals and teams apply directly to the ASC via the website, www.ausport.gov.au/champions or by obtaining a hard copy from my office or by contacting the ASC on 02 6214 111.
