2008 Budget lets local families down

The Budget will do nothing to meet Labor’s promises to keep grocery prices, petrol prices and home interest rates down.  Local residents should take no comfort from Labor’s decision to raise taxes on cars, alcohol, energy, computer software, fringe benefits, passenger movements, passports, visa applications and increases in the costs of private health insurance.  It confirms that Labor stands for higher taxes and this will put upward pressure on inflation.

Labor was left a strong economy by the coalition Government, which had a clear strategy to keep the economy growing.  What concerns me greatly is that unemployment will increase as a result of this Budget.  In fact, despite all the rhetoric about ‘education revolutions’ and lifting productivity, Treasury forecasts show participation rate in the workforce will fall with134,000 fewer people in jobs.
The bottom line is that Labor have not kept their election promises.  Labor promised not to touch private health insurance but they’re gutting it.  Labor promised to leave the baby bonus alone but they’re slashing it.  Labor promised not to increase tax, but taxes have gone up.
After promising so much before the election, Labor have let local families down.

As chairman of the Pine Rivers Red Shield Appeal it was my pleasure on Friday May 9 to welcome local businesses and school representatives to the Official Launch of The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal 2008.  The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $68 million nationally through the Red Shield Appeal with $60,000 being the goal for Pine Rivers.  These funds are vital to meet the budget needs for The Salvation Army’s many community service programs from aged care, youth homelessness, counselling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, employment services just to name a few. To make a credit card donation, please call 13 SALVOS (137258) or visit salvos.org.au.

World Blood Donor Day 2008
On June 14 2008 World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated world wide to recognize the contribution of voluntary unpaid donors who give blood to help save the lives of people they may never meet.
The theme this year is “Many happy returns” and it is a reminder for those of us who haven’t donated in a while to make an appointment, and an opportunity for others who may have never considered giving blood to understand how important it really is.
Giving blood is easy and it only takes an hour of your time, so why not do something special in the lead up to this World Blood Donor Day and give blood.  For further information or to book an appointment call 131495 or visit donateblood.com.au.
