Parliamentarians Against Child Abuse and Neglect (PACAN)
During recent sitting weeks the Parliamentarians Against Child Abuse and Neglect (PACAN) held a function to increase awareness of the many ways we can keep our children safe.
Three websites I would like to draw your attention to provide advice on how to be safe on the internet, training for parents, carers and teachers and also keeping children safe from child abuse and exploitation.

Year of the Blood Donor
2009 is the Year of the Blood Donor and 14 June saw the launch of World Blood Donor Day 2009.
This special year supported by the Federal Government, aims to raise awareness of the ongoing need for blood and to encourage more Australians to find out their blood type and how they can help.
Australian governments fully fund Red Cross for the provision of blood products and services to the Australian community.
This is possible through the support of more than half a million voluntary blood donors.
For more information or to make an appointment to give blood call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au
Jeans for Genes Day
On Friday 7 August you can help make a difference in the fight against children’s genetic diseases.
It’s easy to get involved by wearing your jeans, giving a donation, or buying a badge and supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
For more information go to www.jeansforgenes.org.au or freecall 1800 436 437
Free tax help for low income earners
With tax time upon us, local low income earners will again be able to access free help with their tax returns at my office.
A volunteer tax helper will assist residents to work through the process of preparing and lodging their tax return.
Tax Help is available to anyone who is classified as a low income earner, which for individuals, is a person who earns less than $40,000.
The income threshold to access this service is higher for people with children, with an additional $2,500 of income allowed for each child.
To make an appointment please contact my office on 3205 9977.
All tax returns must be lodged by 31 October.
Good luck to Lachy Ferguson
Locals will no doubt have wished young Lachy Ferguson well at the International Tennis FederationTournament in Paris before he left on 24 June and perhaps we will have received news of how he went by the time this goes to print.
This is the largest Junior Tournament in the world and it is fantastic to see such a young and talented local achieve the goal he has worked so hard towards. No matter how well he played in Paris it has certainly been an amazing effort.
Also an inspiration to the community is Lachy’s father Craig who despite his own battle with cancer this year has been a great support to Lachy and helped him reach his full potential.
Craig along with Chresten Reville, played an integral part in getting the Dayboro First Responders successfully up and running. He approached local businesses for donations and held sausage sizzles and raffles and then trained to be one of the First Responders.
I am sure the family will still welcome and appreciate any financial assistance the community can offer to help meet the costs of getting Lachy to Paris and we wish them all the very best.
