Anzac Day
I encourage local residents to take time this Anzac Day and commemorate the contribution made by Australia’s service men and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.
This Anzac Day marks 94 years since Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the Anzac legend was forged. The proud tradition begun at Gallipoli has been continued through the service of Australian men and women from World War II through to the present.
I would particularly encourage younger Australians to participate in Anzac Day commemorations, whether this be through their school or in their local area. It is important they take part, to ensure the stories and contributions of those who have served Australia are not forgotten. I am looking forward to attending several of the local ceremonies on Anzac Day and hope others will do the same.
Alcoa Foundation 2009 Outstanding Community Worker Award
In 2009 the Alcoa Foundation will again award $5000 to the community sector worker who best exemplifies the sector’s ideals of dedication, excellence, and service. This award provides the chance to recognise and celebrate the contribution to the nation’s life made by the men and women working in community groups. The forms and other information are online at www.ourcommunity.com.au/communityworkeraward Entries close on Friday, 24 April 2009.
Local Sporting Champions Program
The Local Sporting Champions Program offers up to $500 for individuals and $3000 for a team competing in an official state or national sporting competition that is endorsed by the relevant Australian Sports Commission (ASC) recognised national sporting organisation, or national school sport competition.

Australian Defence Medal
The ADM has been established to recognize serving and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their commitment and contribution to the nation by serving for at least four years, or, completion of their initial term of engagement, whichever is the lesser. The application forms for the ADM can be obtained by calling the DHA on 1800 111 321 or can be downloaded from www.defence.gov.au/medals
Finally, I wish everyone a safe and happy Easter and our students and teachers a well earned rest over the school holidays.
