Dayboro & District Rural Fire Brigade
It was great to see some Dayboro locals at the ‘Prepare Act Survive’ meeting at the Petrie Markets in October. We were assisting Ocean View RFB with a large scale HRB that weekend so we only had one of our VCE’s at the meeting.
Your ‘Bushfire Survival Plan’ helps establish when you will leave, what you will take and what to do with your pets.
Have you thought about whether you need more than one Bushfire Survival Plan? Xmas is coming and many of us have guests during the festive season. Have you thought about how you would need to adapt your plan to include guests? You might be a single parent or have part time custody of children. I met a single Dad recently that had two different plans, one for when he was home alone and another for when the kids were there every other week. Your ‘survival kit’ or ‘relocation kit’ would also need to be adapted in these situations. You may need to consider extra food, water, protective clothing, and of course don’t forget the toilet paper and chocolate of course.
You plan to fail, if you fail to plan!
Thank you to our cheeky neighbours (Samsonvale RFB) for your compliment. Trevor, you are welcome to steal any of our ideas you like. Why wouldn’t you want to steal from the best? However, the 1st Officer is a little concerned you have hidden cameras in his bathroom.
VIP – John Juleff
(Volunteer Info Profile)
John has lived in Dayboro for more than 25 years and joined the brigade in 2009. He quickly became one of the favourites.
Having worked for Brisbane City Council for 10 years as part of the Arboriculture team and the last 5 years on BCC suppression team he is certainly a huge asset to the brigade.
John married his wife Kylie in 2006 and they have 3 beautiful daughters.
When John is not walking behind Selwyn’s tractor (a regular job for him lately) or fighting fires, he enjoys being outdoors and likes hunting, fishing and camping.
When I asked John why he joined the brigade he had this to say: ‘It has always been something I was really interested in. You are learning new things all the time and I enjoy the work that’s involved. As a volunteer you feel like you’re giving something back to the community.’
the Wardens’ Word
We don’t mean to harp, but,
We would like to remind you because ‘tis the season – when a fire ban is implemented, all Permits to Light Fire previously issued in the local fire ban area are cancelled.
You can check for local Fire Bans at ruralfire.qld.gov.au
…DIDYANO?…
Fire requires 3 things for ignition to occur.
Fuel, Oxygen and Heat
DDRFB would like to wish you all a happy and safe (preferably wildfire free) season and look forward to sharing our stories with you in the next issue in February 2014.
DON’T LEARN FIRE SAFETY BY ACCIDENT
